Epiphone Goldtop P90 Replacement

Hi,

Looking to replace the pickups in my Epiphone 56 Goldtop (P90's).

I like a transparent overdriven tone. I've tried a Gibson 57 VOS (loaded with 57 classic humbuckers I believe) and the sound was amazing so not sure what P90's would compare?

Any suggestions?

Many thanks,
Mark

Welcome to the forum.

Of the SD P90 offerings, I suggest the SP90-1n and SP90-3n for neck/Rhythm and bridge/Treble positions, respectively. (Yes. Two neck position pickups!) You will probably want to upgrade the pots at the same time.

Re: Epiphone Goldtop P90 Replacement

I'd go with SP90-1's, bridge and neck models. SP90-3's are high output with ceramic magnets, not really anything like a classic P-90 sound, nor what it seems like the OP wants, since he likes '57's which are low output PAF's.

Your pots are fine; no need to replace them unless they're scratchy. They should last for years and sound the same as any other 500K pots.

On further reading looks like the 57 vos reissue has custombuckers - not sure if that makes a difference but this is the sound I'd love (if possible to get close with a p90): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQWjRTNcn2o
