Re: epiphone les paul

I've played an epiphone custom (same guitar but only 2 pickups) and I liked it. The Black Beauty however I don't like because of that middle pickup. It's in the way of my pick, and I find it kinda useless. Everyone has different likes and dislikes when it comes to guitars, and you'll be better off if you play one, because only you can judge what's right for you.

Re: epiphone les paul

The current production Epi's are better than ever, now that they have their own factory and their own employees.

I don't know if you've played an HHH guitar before but there's a few things that most players don't like about them. One is that you have very little space to pick, because you're hitting the PU's unless you're careful about your picking. Another is that middle HB's sound nothing like they would in the bridge or neck. The middle slot isn't a good place string node-wise for an HB, which is why virtually no one's copied the idea in over 50 years (manufacturers copied HSS and HSH instead). Gibson and Epi make HHH guitars for 'historical' reasons, not because there's much demand. Most players with HHH guitars never use the middle PU. Another issue is that they use the same toggle and pots as an HH guitar, so you don't get to take advantage of the six coils you have. Those guitars really should have 5-way switches and push-pulls for coil cut, so you can mix and match coils and get the full benefit. A final issue is that HB's are heavy PU's, and LP's are usually heavy guitars, and having a third HB (that's not used) adds unnecessary weight.

I'd recommend an Epi LP, they're a good value, but to get a regular Custom or a Std Plus.

Re: epiphone les paul

I like Epi Customs, but I personally don't like HHH, for all the reasons already mentioned, and because I think three humbuckers is too much clutter. I like a little breathing room in the space between the bridge and the fingerboard; it's easier on the eyes.

Re: epiphone les paul

I too dislike HHH, just looks they just look too congested, I actually dislike HSH configuration too for the same reason too congested for me, but it is very popular and has nice tonal options on guitars that have them.

Re: epiphone les paul

I do not like to play on HHH guitars either for the same reasons mentioned above. I do not mind HSH as I've found my picking areas on them over the years. As far as the Epi Black Beauty is concerned it sure is a great looking guitar! With practice I am sure you could master the picking on one if you really want to. Epiphone has seemingly improved their quality over the years. My first guitar was an Epiphone Les Paul Classic about 14 years ago now. That guitar wasn't bad but it wasn't great either which is why it eventuallywas sold. These days i've played and seen a lot of improvement from Epiphone!
