Re: epiphone les paul
The current production Epi's are better than ever, now that they have their own factory and their own employees.
I don't know if you've played an HHH guitar before but there's a few things that most players don't like about them. One is that you have very little space to pick, because you're hitting the PU's unless you're careful about your picking. Another is that middle HB's sound nothing like they would in the bridge or neck. The middle slot isn't a good place string node-wise for an HB, which is why virtually no one's copied the idea in over 50 years (manufacturers copied HSS and HSH instead). Gibson and Epi make HHH guitars for 'historical' reasons, not because there's much demand. Most players with HHH guitars never use the middle PU. Another issue is that they use the same toggle and pots as an HH guitar, so you don't get to take advantage of the six coils you have. Those guitars really should have 5-way switches and push-pulls for coil cut, so you can mix and match coils and get the full benefit. A final issue is that HB's are heavy PU's, and LP's are usually heavy guitars, and having a third HB (that's not used) adds unnecessary weight.
I'd recommend an Epi LP, they're a good value, but to get a regular Custom or a Std Plus.
