Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

Buy the Epiphone...do the upgrades and never...i repeat NEVER play a Gibson Semi-Hollow body for an extended period of time!

You'll be happy and "blissfull"!

Seriously though...buy what you can afford and make it work! Don't torture yourself over $$$!

If you do upgrades on an Epi don't expect it to sound and feel like a Gibson though because it won't happen. Some people believe upgrading an Epi can make it more comparable to a Gibson which is a total load of crap. You can change the pickups, electronics, etc but the wood/contruction will still be the same quality and grade of any other chinese guitar.

^ give me your ****ing XPL

damn... okay. Might have to wait 6-8 years till my liver completely craps out..then maybe another 3-5 in terminal end stage liver disease, till I go nuts and die,, unless i die of lung or skin cancer sooner, or develop renal disease... I know enough about seeing dyalisis patients everday to know I'd put a bullet in my brain rather than go through that..Worst case..best case is I croak much sooner)... I dont know why i would do a will, I have no heirs..but I've been meaning to..certainly not for my nephews to get everything in the estate ,so the xpl is yours...cautiously gaurded promise, but sincerly .really..I doubt I'll have much use for it after I'm dead.
In any event, I'm 52..I see myself maybe reaching 60- 62 tops at best. No ****, you can have it. I'll have the probate attorney get in touch with you.

Personally Id rather pay for quality and get one outstanding instrument (after all you can only play one at a time). I never understood why some people have 20 cheap guitars as It seems like a waste.....

your missing the point. Noone ever advocated a cheap guitar..well, not in this thread. A select nice well set up Epi is a worthy instrument..The point is ( for me) to have many good guitars, with different select pickups, for tone variation. Then also to have several excellent guitars with certain choice pickups. When all is said and done, Its all about the pickups. If not, i wouldnt be here. I assemble whole guitars around pickups. yep, I'll start an entire guitar beginning with one or a set of pickups for my tone quest..Its about tone experiments. True, you have to study the tone wood to make the most of it, but the pickups are paramount.

Yeah but if I can have an SG with P90s and love it then why do I need 4 other SGs? That's the thing I never understood about guitar fans. They buy 50 and they can't find the sound or they want more "variety" but I call BS.... Hell, Rory Gallagher recorded 92% of the stuff he did with a strat. It all sounds different and it all sounds good.

Variety in tone doesn't come from whether you use an A2 magnet or A5, that will give you a base tone and you should try to make it work for you. I don't remember Hendrix asking for the number to addiction fx and I don't remember Peter Green whining about how he can't decide on which tubes to use. Sure, we can get into it but I think people today, with all the access to the internet and gear sites get too caught up in what they will buy instead of what they will play. When I first started playing guitar I don't remember thinking about how much I wanted those NOS tubes. I just wanted to be a ****ing rock star.

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

Not this again.............................

If you think an Epi is as good as a Gibson, you're probablly not old enough to find the clit yet.

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

I would say 99% of the time the gibson will be a better sounding and playing guitar, but there are those rare epi gems that with upgraded pick ups and electronics will hold their own with a Gibson. I just happen to have found one. No, I am not a noob. I have good ears, and I have spent the hours in the woodshed to be able to play my guitar and play it well. I don't believe it;s an everyday occurance but it does happen. For the record mine is one of the new ones that is all mahogany. Yes it has a few more pieces of wood glued together than what I would like but there is no arguing with my ears. Once I gut the electrnics and put in a 57 classic in the bridge and a burst bucker pro in the neck I have no doubt it will hold it's own with most gibson les pauls.

LOLZ it's right here on my damn computer monitor what r u talking about ??

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

That said, the dot is one of the better sounding epi's.....after you change out the 'wax bar of soap' pickups and the electronics.

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

I own both. The Gibson's are much better. The Epiphone's feel like toys compared to the Gibson's. However, If I had to go on tour and use nothing but the Epiphone's, it wouldn't bother me.

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

OP, just pick whatever guitar has the features or characteristics you want, and forget whether it is Gibson or Epiphone. Like someone once said, you're playing a guitar, not a headstock.

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

If you've got the cash to splash get a Gibson, if you haven't get an Epi and you're still good. As you can see many of our esteemed forumites have both for varying reasons but the bottom line is that Epi's are generally more than acceptable.
