I have a single channel valve combo and at times it can be difficult to get the right tone or sound with the amp EQ which is gain ,master volume, bass & treble. I have thought of an EQ pedal unit. Has anyone tried these extensively?
Using in the loop has a more dramatic impact than in front
What amp is this? But yeah, with those minimal tone shapers, you could do a world of change / shaping with a decent EQ. I'm going to guess there is no fx loop. Placement of the EQ in terms of preamp/pwer amp makes a difference in what sort of shaping you get. I'm also guessing you like the overdrive/distortion sound of the amp. Or do you use a Pedal?
I'll suggest the MXR 10 band, along with the classic Boss GE7. You could get fancy and get one with presets and change the sound on the fly.
Grab one used and see how you like it. For example, I have a Randy Rhoads preset in my fx that I use in my amp's effect loop that really does "it" for the sound of a RR solo.
Yep. In the loop is a great place for an EQ pedal because it changes the tone after the tone controls on the amp . . . so you have full control over the sound. In front can be OK, but it's still going to run through the amp's tone controls so that limits the control you've got.
Yes, get one, they're insane. Eq is indispensable imo. I recommend a 31 band rack eq because the narrow bands can target the sounds you want more accurately. Just put it on top of your cab. If that's too clunky for you, I recommend the 10 band Boss Eq 200 pedal. If you want something cheap to try out, the 7 band Behringer works fine. Whatever you do, don't get the MXR. Biggest pos piece of kit I've ever bought. Noisy and tone suck. It's a joke how it's well regarded.
It's all about the 31! Lol! I haven't tried the mxr 6. I had a cheap Behringer 7 band and it worked pretty well. I didn't notice any noise or tone suck. Very impressed for $25. Right now I'm using the giant 31 band rack eq which I pretty much need for the precision of the bands.
Don't settle on cheap EQ like the Boo-hringer or anything with less than 10 bands; they do nothing but raising the volume. At least get a dbx 15-band rack EQ; they are not expensive either.
