EQ pedals - can they get you there?

I have a single channel valve combo and at times it can be difficult to get the right tone or sound with the amp EQ which is gain ,master volume, bass & treble. I have thought of an EQ pedal unit. Has anyone tried these extensively?

What amp is this? But yeah, with those minimal tone shapers, you could do a world of change / shaping with a decent EQ. I'm going to guess there is no fx loop. Placement of the EQ in terms of preamp/pwer amp makes a difference in what sort of shaping you get. I'm also guessing you like the overdrive/distortion sound of the amp. Or do you use a Pedal?

I'll suggest the MXR 10 band, along with the classic Boss GE7. You could get fancy and get one with presets and change the sound on the fly.

Grab one used and see how you like it. For example, I have a Randy Rhoads preset in my fx that I use in my amp's effect loop that really does "it" for the sound of a RR solo.

Using in the loop has a more dramatic impact than in front, but it can work. It all depends on exactly what you're trying to do. I've owned a bunch over the years and love the EQ200

Yep. In the loop is a great place for an EQ pedal because it changes the tone after the tone controls on the amp . . . so you have full control over the sound. In front can be OK, but it's still going to run through the amp's tone controls so that limits the control you've got.

EQ is one way. Various overdrives and distortion pedals are another. Also, keep in mind that single channel amps are great at 1 basic sound, and it might not be the sound you like.

Of course an EQ "can" get you "there" "sometimes" - It just depends on where you are trying to go. :D

Typically, they make a larger impact than we often times think and they are easy to forget about using when we are hunting for something sound wise to help us get a certain sound.

NO effects loop..yes I like the gain at times. playing a neck p/up especially a HB can require a lot of adjusting ..it's a Vox AC10. I do remember one Mesa Boogie Combo had a full equaliser built in . It's very rare to see this now

I have my EQ200 in front of my living room amp only because I don't want to run extra cables to have some stuff in the loop.

Yes, get one, they're insane. Eq is indispensable imo. I recommend a 31 band rack eq because the narrow bands can target the sounds you want more accurately. Just put it on top of your cab. If that's too clunky for you, I recommend the 10 band Boss Eq 200 pedal. If you want something cheap to try out, the 7 band Behringer works fine. Whatever you do, don't get the MXR. Biggest pos piece of kit I've ever bought. Noisy and tone suck. It's a joke how it's well regarded.

EQ in front of a tube amp affects the gain texture. This can be useful.
EQ in the loop shapes the overall tone.

Modded EQs are available which focus their power on tuning the mids.
That's where most of the tone character lives, for guitar at least.

There are places which will modify an existing GE7 for this.

ok thanks. I've just checked out the Behringer EQ- one sells for less than $30 .many amps don't have an effects loop...I guess you would place these before any other pedal?

Hey Clint did you ever try the mxr6?
I feel the same as you about the 10(albeit a bit less extreme lol), but I had the 10, boss7, and mxr6(black) all at the same time and the 6 was easily the best IMO. Now I was only using them as shapeable boosters in the front, no as a final eq in the loop, but I'd have to assume my preference would still be the 6 by a mile.

btw I still have the black 6 and also a silver 6, and sold those others shortly after getting them

It's all about the 31! Lol! I haven't tried the mxr 6. I had a cheap Behringer 7 band and it worked pretty well. I didn't notice any noise or tone suck. Very impressed for $25. Right now I'm using the giant 31 band rack eq which I pretty much need for the precision of the bands.

Oh yea the 31 must be a dream. So much midrange control.

Don't settle on cheap EQ like the Boo-hringer or anything with less than 10 bands; they do nothing but raising the volume. At least get a dbx 15-band rack EQ; they are not expensive either.

the one I was looking at is the Behringer EQ 700...but some reviews suggest this does not work so well without a loop..

Sorry, I missed your earlier post. It works fine. I didn't notice anything suspect about it even though it's inexpensive. You wanna run it after your distortions but can be before the fx pedals like delay or reverb etc. I'm not getting this idea that an eq has to be in the loop.
