Essential L.P. upgrades! Curly, Lew, Zerb, Jonesy?

Re: Essential L.P. upgrades! Curly, Lew, Zerb, Jonesy?

I would say pots, caps, and 50's wiring are all good changes to make.

Those changes may make you use the volume and tone knobs very differently; before I read about all that stuff on the LPF I used to run everything wide open but the above changes have really made me aware of how versatile a LP can be.

Zerb,

tonepros offers bridges and tailpeices in black. From other posts, it seems that these are all modified gotoh bridges. from previous posts in this thread, it appears that gotoh makes theirs out of aluminum. so maybe these black bridges are made of aluminum. I am sure you could ask the tonepros folks. they have the best customer service in the world.

Hmm, worth looking into, at least for the tailpiece (I like the Tonepros locking bridges, but not on MY les pauls, I don´t like the way they change the tone in the high end).

Btw, Do you maybe have a link to a company I´m not boycotting for ethical reasons? (i.e. Anyone but WD in this case) :D:D

*EDIT* Just noticed, it looks like Tonepros is owned or at least strongly affiliated with WD. Please tell me this isn´t true, because if it is the search just ended...[/

ALF....I'm having the RS kit installed right now (as well as the aluminum tailpiece), what didn't you like about the RS wiring?

It seemed too "normal" acting to me. Someone else posted about how the vol/tone controls work a little differently with the '50s wiring. That's true, and I really like the way they interact. I got quite used to how they worked on my Oxblood and Epi Dot (also wired that way). When I got the Pro back, the controls just seemed to act like they did before, no interaction between vol and tone. Nice sounds for sure, but I'm sure that's because of the quality components.

It's hard to describe the interaction that's going on in the '50s wiring, maybe Lew or someone who's better with words can describe it better than I. But, it seems like when you back off the tone, you affect the volume a little too, like you take back a little gain or something. I'm sure that's not what happens, but that's the effect I get. I like how it works and I wire all my Gibby guitars like that now.

Thanks! I am going to give the RS schematic a try. Who knows...I may like it.

1 Meg volume pots come before pickups IMO. LPs need as much treble on tap as they can get. You can make them yourself by combining the casing of a long-shaft pot with the guts of a 1M pot, or you can get them pre-made from Torres.
