Eventide H9 - experiences? Really considering one...

Before people jump off the deep end about analog versus digital and the cost of this unit, let me explain how much more practical this application may be for me. I am legally blind and can only identify pedals by foot, I have to feel around the order of pedals with my foot ike how some type with their hands with out looking, but this is proving to be a real challenge for me and I am struggling with turning pedals on/off appropriately while jamming with others.... I am looking to keep delays, reverbs/filters and modulation under one roof and I think the Eventide H9 may be what I need. It does have an LCD screen, but I can download the H9 control app for my IPhone and my Iphone reads outloud to me, so the Iphone could make this unit completely accessible to me for editing and saving presets. So for me, less reall is more, less being fewer pedals/switches and more meaning as much of this is under a quality roof that is accessible for me....

Has anyone tried one of these units out? What are your impressions.... online demos sound cool, but those are kind of limiting.

I have been testing a unit for the past couple of weeks and I am very impressed. I love the feature where the user can download new algorithms. If you want to add a ring modulator or a host of other effects to the unit you can do so for $20, I don't know where you would get a quality RM for that kind of money. The unit is bluetooth so you will not need to have a cable running from your iPad/iPhone to edit sounds. As far as the digital/analog thing goes, I think there are great sounding pedals in both camps. This unit sounds like pure Eventide, very clean, crisp and extremely quite. The loaded effects run from some of the beautiful reverbs that come with the Eventide Space to some synth-like Harmonizer and Mod sounds. The tremolo in the unit is also killer. I am more than impressed with the H9.

so there is a delay in switching between patches?

There is a delay in switching between any two patches on a multi-effect. The question is how long is it and will it affect the way you play. I find the switching to be fine for my applications I am not popping between patches with the H9, I will typically have one effect set for a tune.

I am more or less the same way. Still found the, to be very inspiring tho!

good points... is there a delay for even just turning the unit on? Securb, you also live in Boston, very cool. Do you ever go to Mr. Music in Alston? That's my favorite shop...

I live north of Boston now but I lived on Pomeroy St in Allston down by the Model Cafe and Twin Donut, walkinging distance. Mr. Music was my go to store for years. My Saturday deal would be to hit Mr. Music for strings and such, then off to the Sunset Grill to sample a few of the 500 beers they had on hand. I think I have been in the Guitar Center on Comm ave twice, if Mr. Music didn't have what I needed typically I would go to Daddy's Junky Music on Mass Ave. It is a crying shame all the Daddy's stores go shut down.

If memory serves ... Yes, there was a delay even on turn-on. Once again, I o not think this is would be significant even at a gig or rehearsal so long as you power up your board first ... I know common practice is to power up the amp first to get the valves cooking.

This thread has me wanting to return to Ludlow and play the H9 again!

Yep, there is a boot up wait but it is not that long, maybe a couple of seconds. I would suggest playing one again. The more time I spend with the unit the more I like it. I have been playing with the vibe and trem settings a lot and really dig the pedal. The reverb setting from the Space are also very cool and sound like the original unit. I am loving the fact I can pack up this little box for a jam and leave 3-5 pedals at home. I can easily get away with just the H9, an overdrive and a wah/volume on my board.

Sadly, Daddys just did not seem to carry that nice of gear and I had more negative experiences with staff than positive.... but that doesn't mean all staff were terrible, I had only been to 3 locations total.... The Daddys on Mass Ave is now a GC I believe under the same management from Daddys.... I'll also have to go back to the shop and see if they have an H9 in stock, I know they've got the Factor line in the shop, but not sure about the H9...

If Guitar Center on Mass Ave has the same DJM staff deal with Mark Sullivan. Mark is an effects guru and a very fair guy, he has steered me away from making bad purchases and has given great deals in the past. Mark will actually listen to what you want to achieve and point you in the right direction. You are correct though I have run into some douchy sales people at Daddys as in other music stores.

Looks like a great unit... Thinking about it, but the big gotcha is no analog dry path.

Re: Eventide H9 - experiences? Really considering one...

I might hop on this if there's nothing new in NAMM. It would be nice to get rid of my rack and Strymon stuff. I would need to get another Minimix or get a stereo one made, which is a bummer.

Re: Eventide H9 - experiences? Really considering one...

Ok - I'm weak - its on the way. If its good, I'll have some strymon goodies on the block next week. Blue Sky, Ola, and El Cap.

This has me seriously GASsing..

Re: Eventide H9 - experiences? Really considering one...

Only my 2nd night playing with it. Seeing the need to get the H9 core along with it, but the H949 algorithm is really sweet!

I finally gigged/practiced with it and I found no problems with the switching what-so-ever. There was no delay to be concerned with and the thing sounded awesome. The H949 algorithm is magical. Have you used the free algorithm yet? I went with the ring mod seeing that is one of the few effects missing from my board. I haven't gotten that deep into it but a quick review of the settings has me pretty happy.

I love the fact that if you are somewhat bored and want to cure your GAS attack you can download another algorithm for $20 and explore new settings.
