Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

Almost every Big Muff I've tried has a floppy bass, actually every fuzz does...that is part of the sound. Great for sustained lines, not so good with chunky chords.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

The Metalzone doesn't have floppy bass.

Putting them through the right amp (Marshall type usually) with the right amount if natural overdrive from the amp helps. I've also heard stacking them with a tube screamer really tightens things up.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

Boss BC-2. NOISY and acts funny. I can't even define the weird noises I hear when running it into a crunchy amp. I did not realize it was digital until I had bought it online but still had hopes. Nope. Not for me or my amp.

EHX LPB-1. Noisy in a different way and only really works for me if I put a buffered pedal in front of it, which is the pedal I was trying to replace! I tried one in a store and really liked it. Not with my own gear, apparently.

Fulltone Full Drive 3.

Pedal was weak on tone, distortion, boost, drive. Totally wussy. I was lucky, I owned it for a day and was able to trade it in for a Fulltone Robin Trower Overdrive. That was a good trade.

Sure, you can tighten up that bass with another overdrive...but I've never heard a pure fuzz pedal that didn't have bass that was floppy. Once it starts tightening up, it no longer sounds like a fuzz pedal to me, though.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

I bought a Danelctro Spring King reverb once when I was young. I was still young when I sold it...

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

Danelectro Daddy-O. I got it real cheap off of EBay along with a Fab Tone. I liked the Fab Tone for some heavier sounds but then it stopped working.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

I wasn't a fan of the Daddy-O either. Bleh!
I loved their little Surf & Turf compressor, though.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

The only pedal I've bought and been unimpressed with was an MXR Blue Box. It sounded great in the store, but once I got it home it wouldn't track for sh*t through my amp. I think I used the same guitar at home and at the shop, but it was 10+ years ago so I don't really remember anymore.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

Boss Power Stack, good tone bot sounds way too noisy with gain after 12 pm which is the gain I want of it. I have heard people saying the original amps it emulates are noisy but I don't see why it had to be that noisy. Even the Metal Core is way more quiet and has much less noise.

' Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal? '

Much, much, much more than I've ever been whelmed by a pedal, that's fer sure.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

Old thread - whatever.

The Z-Vex Fuzz probe sounds cool, but only after a lot of tweaking to find a sweet spot and it's very hard to get the sweet spot back.

Slightly underwhelmed by the Moog delay (way too dark unless you put an EQ in the FX loop)

I got great drone sounds out of my Big Muff when I used another distortion in front of it, it actually sounded like the guitar was on fire somehow....trying to get a tight sound out of a fuzz? Don't bother!

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

Caline Puffer Fuzz... It was said to be a silicon Fuzz Face but with a tone knob added. It sounded more like an overdrive and only started to sound fuzzy once you maxed out all the knobs. It didn't sound horrible, but the expectation that was set was far from what I got.

I had to drive my Big Muff with a gain boost, or a distortion for drones. Same for the Z-Vex.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

I think it would go something like this, in order of dislike

#3 Mooer Shim Verb - very metallic to my ears

#2 Devi Ever Bi Fuzz - makes farty noises, which may suit some

and taking top spot this time

#1 The Zvex Fuzz Factory - I could never get a remotely usable sound out of it, and exchanged it back at the store it came from for an Xotic AC Booster

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

Mooer ShimVerb. Guess I just expected something different.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

The Shimverb is bright as hell. I remember that. Wouldn't buy one either. Very flexible, but nothing that I enjoyed much.
A Nano Holy Grail is way better IMO.

Re: Ever been thoroughly underwhelmed by a pedal?

Wampler Catapulp, no where near the "orange" style tone , lol.
