EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

Diminished Triad

New member
Does anyone know the difference between these guitars and a reasonable price range for each?
Have seen a large range on Ebay and at other sites some going for much less.
Haven't received a clear answer yet since i've asked the owners and they are justifying their prices.
Thanks for any info you can share!

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

The Wolfgang is a different outline and mass to the other two. It has two pickups.

The Frankenstein replica model should be routed HSS and have a small section of pickguard over the controls area. Purists would argue that it should also have a coin nailed into it for the vibrato to rest against.

All three models seem disproportionately expensive for what goes into them. On the other hand, Edward expects tribute to be paid in full.

Thanks! Try any of them or hear them in action live? Wondering why such a price difference between them.
Thanks again.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

They are expensive for being simple guitars, but damn do they play well. If the Striped series came out uhh...Un-striped (ha) I'd own one, for sure. The Worlfgang's are damn good too.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

The Fender/EVH Striped Series is a one-trick pony, but it's a damn good trick.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

Different necks. The Stripe Series necks are more like Charvels, and the Wolfgangs have Wolfgang necks on them.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

Striped series necks are nothing like Charvel necks-- WAY different neck profiles and differnt nut width than a Charvel. Have you tried them? They have the same back profile as the Wolfgang, but are a little wider at 1 11/16" nut width and have larger, non-stainless steel frets.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

the newer wolfgangs dont have stainless frets either, the imported (read less expensive) wolfgangs at least

yeah the initial MIJ and MIC Wolfgangs had the small SS frets-- they decided to go with larger frets on the new ones and non-SS.

Yes, I've tried them. I owned one of the first Japanese Wolfgangs for about a year. I played a couple of the Striped Series guitars at a Guitar Center when they first came out. Those necks were "more like Charvel necks" than the Wolfgang neck on my EVH Special. I found them very similar (if not the same) to the neck on my USA made 2008 Charvel Style 2 2H, which is the same as the necks on my Mexican made Charvel San Dimas guitars.

The Striped Series guitars that I played did not have the same profile as a Wolfgang. They also have a 1 11/16" nut width, which is the same as a Charvel.

http://www.evhgear.com/gear/subpage/?partno=5107902576 1.6875" = 1 11/16" and 42.8mm = 1 11/16"

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

I'm thinking traditional charvel, which is 1 3/4" nut width.

The back contour on the striped is still the Wolfgang contour, but the 1 11/16" nut width (vs. the 1 5/8" on the Wolfgang necks) makes them feel a little different. The fret size does too-- those Wolfs with the small SS frets make the whole neck feel smaller. I'm still surprised that a 1/16" difference in width at the nut can make things feel different too.

Still, it's nothing like the back contour on a Charvel-- different shape. The Charvels (san dimas, pro-mods, etc.) that I've played in the last few years all have more of a d shape to them, whereas the Wolfgang contour is more of an asymmetrical c shape; alot rounder.

I have 3 Wolfgangs --- 2 MIJs and an MIC. I also had a Charvel USA pro mod for a few months and the back contour was nothing like the Wolfgangs. That Charvel had the 1 3/4" nut width though, and I'm thinking that it's really hard to talk about back contour without factoring in nut width as that really does change the overall feel.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

I have a Charvel Pro mod and EVH Striped, and the necks are very similar

The Specials , aside from a different shape, are basically a striped with a neck pickup.

Actually, the pricing of the Striped Series is on par with the Mexican built Charvels and the Pro Series Jacksons, and as far as I know, they're all three built in Fender's factory in Mexico.

I have been GASing for a Pro Mod for a while. Isnt it pretty much the same guitar as the evh striped but with a neck pickup and a solid paint color?

I have both

The Pro Mod has an Alder body, with Duncan JB/ '59 pickups. Also has aluminum control cover plates.

The EVH Striped has the striped paint job- which when you look closely, you can see the paint seems, so it's done by stencil/ hand, it's not a wrap or graphic, so it costs more and is more labor intensive, and IMO the paint finish is better than the MIA Pro mods. Maybe the MIJ and MIM were finished better, but the MIA Pro Mods had thin finished that chipped easily.

The EVH has a basswood body and the EVH Wolfgang bridge pickup.

The EVH has the EVH Floyd, which is supposed to be the same Korean Floyd on the Promod series, but is stamped EVH. The EVH has flimsy soft plastic electronics cavity and trem covers, which feel very cheap compared to any guitar manufactuter- (whereas the Charvel has aluminum). The EVH has the EVH Wolfgang pickup.

The EVH has a graphite reinforced quartersawn maple neck, whereas the Charvel is just quartersawn maple.

The EVH also has the D-Tuna, the Charvel does not.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

Cool, I didn't realize the EVH striped guitars had the graphite reinforced rods in their necks. With their being so little (is there any?) finish on the neck, some extra reinforcement is probably good protection against a neck twisting.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

Do they play about the same? I love the feel of my evh striped!

I haven't had my hands on the new MIM Wolfgang Specials, which now have Jumbo Frets and the wider 1 11/16 Nut, which sound like the necks from the Striped series.

I did play the MIJ Wolfgang Special, and didn't like it at all. The flat top ones had the strings raised too far off the body, the narrower 1 5/8" neck with vintage size frets just made the neck too small and unplayable for my tastes.

The MIM ones, with the black hardware, arch top and jumbo frets, seem to be spec'd better, though I have yet to play one
