I guess I wasn't to clear above. The proto should have been Mahogany body and neck with flametop veneer. How it came to be Korina and Maple was the mystery. I'm cool with Korina/Maple although all Korina woulda been more fun to have. Talk about some nice snap. YUM!!!

There are no explorers in the picture I just "quoted" above either That's an ash (sen) bodied Ibanez "lawsuit" Destroyer....just like EVH's before he mauled it.

Yes, it is not an "Explorer", but then quite a few of the guitars in this thread are not "Explorers" either. There are Deans, Hamers, etc.
Let me quote myself:

I did a little research and he owned a few Explorer-types, Chances are that the one he used in '76 was a Ibanez 2459 Destroyer.

Also, another guy not generally associated with Explorers is Eric Clapton. Yet, there was an ad in the '70s for MusicMan where he is standing in front of a full stack playing an Explorer. I also remember seeing a photo of him wearing a white suit, playing a white Explorer.
