i'd like to ask what are you favorite:

. Paints

. Finishes

. Sandpaper Grit

for builds.

brush on paints and finishes preferably.

thanks.

Re: Favorite Finish For Builds ?

paints - depends on the project

finishes - I loved working with Tung oil, it was so easy, smelled GREAT, and proved to be a beautiful, durable finish that feels great to play on. Also, I used minwax stains which were easy to work with, and quite good.

Sandpaper grit - uh what? I've use everything from 60 to 2000 grit paper. No preference or anything. Different grits for different purposes.

You're not going to brush on paint, you'll spray it on. Lacquer is what you want, and Duplicolor is cheap, easy to work with, and easy to find in many colors.

Stain.....Stewmac has some good stuff
Nitro - Behlen Stringed Instrument Lacquer is the only one I've used.

See below

Re: Favorite Finish For Builds ?

Reranch for color and primer. Deft lacquer for sealer and clear coat (available at hardware stores, and cheaper than Reranch's equivalents). I hear Minwax may be slightly better than Deft, but my local hardware stores don't stock it.

Note: Only the gloss Deft has cellulose nitrate listed as an ingredient. Semi, matte, and sealer don't list it.

Sandpaper grits I use are 1000 (dry and wet) for sanding between coats. 1000, 2000, and 3200 (dry and wet) for polishing the final coat. Then I use white auto rubbing compound for the final polish. I also use 400 sometimes for fixing mistakes. But for the most part, lacquer is really easy to keep free of blemishes. It's a very forgiving finish. Poly and enamel are a ***** in that regard.

Duplicolor is great and cheap. Nitro is expensive but I like the way it lays on better than acrylic. I've used reranch and am in the middle of a job with gracey's

BIN primer. Deft sanding sealer

Tru oil for necks

Re: Favorite Finish For Builds ?

thank you all.

i know that spray paint is preferred, but winter is coming and i don't have an indoor spray area, so i'm thinking brush-on is better for my situation. i can't recall the names, but i have seen brush on jobs by members here that looked great.

i forgot to mention that it's only the neck that i'll be working on and only the headstock will be painted.

thanks again.

more if ya got it.

Tung oil. Wipe it on, sand, wipe it on again. You can even add stain if you like.

Re: Favorite Finish For Builds ?

Unless you are a talented painter it's going to be hard to get what most would consider acceptable results with a brush. If you don't want to spray look at color tone dyes or the like for color and tung or tru oil for the finish.

hmmm. 10 or 20 coats sanded between coats won't be good ? it's a solid color.

Re: Favorite Finish For Builds ?

i seem to recall having seen Minwax used in a build that i thought had a nice finish. is this a poular choice ?
