Favorite Guitar Modeling Software?

Re: Favorite Guitar Modeling Software?

Sold everything I own and am just using Line6 Guitar Port Gold Bundle right now. Got it on sale for $99. Plenty good enough sounding to fool non-guitarists. Comes with POD Farm which is the easiest way to setup what various configs you want.

The Riffworks recording software is junk but I manage to use it.

Re: Favorite Guitar Modeling Software?

I've been more than satisfied with the sounds available in Gearbox/Pod Farm. Seriously top notch stuff in there.* My only complaint is that I don't have full flexibility over the ordering of the components, so for that I augment the modeler with pedals that allow me a bit more granular control over what feeds into what.

*- No, I don't love EVERY model, but there are enough good to great ones for me to do what I want to do.

Good to hear some love for the Line 6 software. It comes down to the difference between something that's "useful" (good enough to get the job done) and something that's "amazing" (something that will fool a musician's ears). Line 6 is in the former category for me, and for the price, that makes me happy.

Re: Favorite Guitar Modeling Software?

So what are the tell-tale signs that would allow a musician to spot a modeled tone over a real amp? I've heard such a wide variety of sounds, in both flavor and quality, both in-person and on albums, from both camps that I'm not sure what you mean when you say "fool a musician's ears."

Re: Favorite Guitar Modeling Software?

Hmmm. Good question.

The only things I could name off-hand is a tendency of some modelers to have a blurry low-end, and to not clean up naturally when rolling back the volume. But it's not something I would ever claim I could pick out from someone else's recording; I only notice this sort of thing when I'm the one playing.

And yeah, these problems are hardly only the province of modelers -- there are all kinds of paths to crappy tone (and vice versa).

So your point is well-taken. Guess by "musician's ears" I might mean "people with pickier ears than mine."

ToneportGX + headphones for me. But I prefer tube amps for recordings, it is just that they are loud and expensive to record.

Re: Favorite Guitar Modeling Software?

I just did a video with Guitar rig 2 of a santana song. I think its not bad. I enjoyed learning it, and it turned out OK i think. Will post on here shortly.

I've found GearBox (I'm still using one of the original Guitar Ports) can get me in the ball park of most higher gain tones I like. I've never been impressed much by the cleans though.

However, when I got Logic Studio, the bundled guitar modelling software (Guitar Amp Pro, I think) more than covers all my bases for cleaner tones. Coupled with all the effects that come as standard with Logic, the Mainstage (live performance tool) programme pretty much provides me with all the flexibility I need. - Note some models come free with Garage Band - These are not in the same league as those that come with Logic!! The models with Logic sound a lot more life like, and feel more responsive. Plus Mainstage lets you run two amps simultaneously... Technically when I (eventually) get the thing that lets you use GearBox as a plugin (not standard with guitar port... you have to buy it) that'd let me run a guitaramppro rig on one speaker and a gearbox tone on the other...

Mainstage/Guitar Port + a set of KRK RP6 monitors is the source of both my practice tone and recorded tone, and personally I'm happy with that :)

Re: Favorite Guitar Modeling Software?

Gearbox and POD Farm have some decent tones but sound pretty fake and synthetic to me. I do love them for 80's style pop music though where those qualities are real strengths

Revalver MKIII sounds pretty good for heavier tones, but I dont really play that style much

I've been thrilled with Amplitube Fender for clean and crunch tones. Its by far the most dynamic of any sim I've played

Amplitube Hendrix is another love of mine since its got great wahs, univibe and about 8 fuzz modesl to use

Another really strong one is Overloud TH1, probably the best sounding overall, from cleans to flat out metal

L6 does have a few good metal amps I suppose with the expansion pacsk though, like the Bogners and Engls
