Re: Favorite neck wood(s) and why?

Maple and Mahog are the only neck woods I've tried, but I prefer Maple. The Mahog that I've tried sounds grainy. I also really like the different finishes. Unfinished, satin, and gloss all sound very distinct to me.

Re: Favorite neck wood(s) and why?

I prefer roasted maple. It doesn't need a finish and plays like a dream. Sounds like any other maple neck, too.

AS a Warmoth devotee, I can tell you that there are sooo many woods for shaft neck and fretboard.Lots of different feel, and tone shift options from your traditional Rosewood and Maple .Your neck is the most important tonewood parameter on your guitar. You really need to study it. Maple/ Rosewood are stalwarts, but there are so many other great options. For instance, most people voting Maple might be surprised that 'Pau Ferro' sounds almost indistinguishable from Maple, yet offers a smooth and silky feel on the board.I think looks have a lot to do with it- we tend to want the traditional Maple look. That said, nothing beats Maple if thats the sound you want, but a premium wood like "Padouk", has a brilliant sound totally like Maple, but also a has a rich dimensionality and an inviting smooth feel, although it's a heavy wood .
As far as Indian Rosewood, I can say for certain that Ziricote and maybe others offer a richer tone more luxurious feel iMO than typical Rosewood( Brazllian Rosewood being the Gold Standard , which is for all intents not available anymore)

I like light necks and can not lie!

For a shredder-thin neck,,,,,,,,,, maple w/rosewood board.
For a slightly thicker profile (like 20mm at 1st),,,1pc Honduran mahogany w/ebony board.

People tend to assume hog=heavy,,,,,but as a neck-wood it's going to be noticeably lighter than maple unless it's a hoggish-big peace of hog.

I prefer maple. Seems to add snappier edge to the sound. I like that.

Absolutely this. Feels and looks better than regular Maple (obviously just my opinion.)

I do like a Mahogany plus Ebony combo, but after owning multiple types of necks, I always go for the 1 Piece Roasted Quartersawn Maple (all I use now for electrics.)

My Warmoth has a wenge neck which is very stable and unfinished. It is a cool color, too. The stripe is satine, or bloodwood.

I'm spoiled, for sure. I like the ones I have so much I consider this wood or that wood then order roasted maple. :laugh2:

I'm in the same boat...consider others and then order Roasted Quartersawn Maple. ;)

That being said, an all-Rosewood neck is beyond fine!

Yeah, that's true.

And wenge, like Mincer has. Nice neck, Mincer.

Re: Favorite neck wood(s) and why?

I'm not sure, I tend to prefer mahogany, but maple works great too. I'm going to be carving a padouck blank soon, so I'll find out.
Been wanting to try wenge, would love Rosewood, but is there a single dalbergia that is not on the cites restriction? An all Rose wood neck is going to cost me, so I should get my chichen while I can. I have some wenge that I plan on using for a slotted one off Wolfgang I'll be making, but it's fir my own pleasure only, just wanted to make a Wolfgang neck, but 3pc,slotted with locking tuners. And changing squire construction. I would love to stripe it with the center piece.

There is one wood I've been wanting to try really badly, black acacia, also know as Tasmanian blackwood, getting it stateside although not in acoustics, but either blanks or dimensional lumber has been difficult, I'll have to get it off eBay I guess.

I started making a Tasmanian Blackwood explorer neck before the guy who claimed the build wanted reverse headstock & Maple, very light and chips real easy - must do something with it one day

Sweet, sorry to hear what happened though. It's supposed to sound similar to both mahogany and Koa though.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you get it?

Oh wait, you checked and it seems your from New Zealand, new question, is there a place that will sell to end consumers, rough or finished, that live over seas? I can't find a place on the USA, although Taylor guitars uses it.

Re: Favorite neck wood(s) and why?

Pretty traditional tastes here.

I like maple on Fenders and mahogany on Gibsons and PRS.

Rosewood fingerboards on either.

Altho I have two Fenders with one piece maple neck/fingerboards, and that's a classic sound and feel that I'm very comfortable with as well.

Re: Favorite neck wood(s) and why?

Bolt on guitars in 25.5 scale or longer maple and prefer Rosewood boards. Snappy stable and consistent in particular if quarter sawn.
Set necks or neck through in 24.75 or 25 scales Mahogany with an ebony board. Smoother warmer tone and the ebony adds just enough top end definition. Again prefer quarter sawn for consistency, stability and strength.
Like some other combos like in particular Koa with Ebony but those two above are the standards.
In the poll picked Maple overall.

We grow it here in NZ too so some may be locally grown, I got given a bunch of offcuts from a cabinet maker who I did some work for, I can get 85mm x 19mm for $5.50 per metre, might be cheaper to get Koa by the time you add shipping? - let me know if you want me to look further into it
