Re: Favorite Speakers

Depends on the cab and rig... but how can you make a list without green backs? or G12h30's?

My most used cab has original V30's with mesa 90 watt black shadows in it. For me its picking the right tool for the right job and not all jobs are created equal.

Re: Favorite Speakers

Currently the Legends are my favorite. I swapped them out for a pair of 5150 speakers and really lost my way. Once I reinstalled the Legends , I felt reborn. It's amazing how much of a difference a pair of speakers makes. Technically thinking a speaker should get out of the way of your sound and play what your rig sounds like but they alter the tone greatly and one has to be careful selecting the right speaker. I'm not sure how one would figure out which speaker is right for their given rig without having them all at the house and swapping them out over and over.

That's the nature of the beast. Amps are about 50% of your tone, speakers make up another 30%. Pickups, cables, strings, picks, guitar woods, and the player make up the other 20%.

Re: Favorite Speakers

I really don't have a preference whatever sounds good at the time I like!... right now I'm really liking the stock 12 inch Eminence speaker in my older Fender HR deluxe but I also love Celestion vintage 30s

Re: Favorite Speakers

I didn't vote because you need to be more specific. What amp? Conbo? Head? It all makes a difference.

That typed I prefer in a cabinet the Greenbacks. IMHO they are the best speakers for blues to rock. They break up well & clean up very well. With a Fender style amp I lean more towards an emminence. Not sure which one I have but I replaced the original speaker in my Deluxe Reverb with an emminence & it sounds really good. My Super Reverb also has replacement speakers but I don't know what they are. And my Marshall 900 combo has the 75W celestions. So I think it depends quite a bit on the amp and flavor of the tones that you are after.

Re: Favorite Speakers

I'm a huge fan of the Classic Lead 80's. I run a pair in my 2x12 cab and one in one 1x12 modeler. The improvement in the sound of the modeler was immediate with the swap from the stocker. A bigger, fuller, more natural sound with better projection.

Sorry about forgetting Greenbacks guys, I just put down whatever speakers immediately came to mind.

Re: Favorite Speakers

Right now I have my eye on four speakers. The amp I would run them in is a Blackstar HT 40 in either a 1x12 or 2x12 format.

WGS
1.Retro 30 (Vintage 30 clone)
2.HP Reaper (green back clone)

Eminence
1.Wizard
2.Governor

Re: Favorite Speakers

Big fan of the Emi Swamp Thangs, EVM-12L, Emi Texas Heats, Celestion G12-65, and Celestion G12H-100

Re: Favorite Speakers

I'm enjoying the G12H30 and Greenback pairing in my cab at the moment...

Re: Favorite Speakers

My favorite cab has Celesion G12M Greenbacks. My Vox' with Celestion Blues are very nice. My Vintage 30 cab is maybe a tie for 2nd. I also have a Hiwatt with Fanes that I like. Recently I'm trying out G12H 55 Heritage speakers. Not broken in yet, can't say they are better or worse.

No Rob option on the poll? I thought we had ground rules, man! :nana:

Re: Favorite Speakers

I've definitely had the most experience with vintage 30s but I recently played a Marshall 4x12 with g12t-75s and I was really into it. I also have emi c-Rex's in my twin which I love.

...also like greenbacks

Damn. :scratchch I guess I can't pick

Re: Favorite Speakers

Eminence Man-O-Wars and Governors, mixed. That combo does everything well but excels at anything rock or metal.

Re: Favorite Speakers

I love Eminence speakers . I have Rajun Cajuns in my Fender Frontman 25R and Fender Champion 30 combos, and am seriously considering getting the Texas Heat 12" 150 watt speaker for my 1988 Fender Studio 85 amp. I've heard nothing but good things about that speaker.

Re: Favorite Speakers

I don't have that much experience with different speakers, but I've found the Celestion G10N-40 pretty good. It's apparently meant to sound a bit like a Greenback with more chime, but I've found it to sound surprisingly warm and deep for a 10" in a small box.
