Fearless Gear Review: LINE 6 SPIDER V

Re: Fearless Gear Review: LINE 6 SPIDER V

Agreed on pretty much all points. His monologues sound like they're written as essays, but even as an essay they would need work as he relies too much on assertion rather than the all so crucial critical analysis. Assertion is necessary in any essay, but it's kind of a law of diminishing returns - too much assertion will detract from the overall essay. His overuse of assertion - that's what I mean by the smugness and believing in his own hype. If we also want to subject him to the standard of essays, then we could also talk about logical fallacies, which he appears to think he isn't guilty of, but he is (we're all guilty). I don't mind his honesty, but when he tries to act like he's some sort of Gordon Ramsay of the recording industry or Lewis Black (without any of Ramsay's or Black's humility) it gets a bit cringey.

Re: Fearless Gear Review: LINE 6 SPIDER V

What I'm saying is true and valid because I'm standing here screaming it at a video camera. Seems to be a common rhetorical strategy.

Re: Fearless Gear Review: LINE 6 SPIDER V

Exactly - it's the academic equivalent of fluffing up an essay with a diverse and "intellectual" sounding vocabulary to try and make the arguments appear more refined, and thus more valid. That's not the case - trash that is written eloquently is still eloquent, pretentious, trash. Loudly asserting arguments that sometimes need more support aren't any more correct - they're still underdeveloped claims, but with an annoying delivery.

The irony - he's said in multiple videos that high school was worthless. Maybe so for him if he didn't have any interest in learning, because there are plenty of resources to receive a decent high school education (but only if a student wants to learn). If they don't want to, well they'll still pass because the standards for reading and writing are so pitifully low. And this is coming from a product of California's public education system - I should be statistically at a disadvantage to anyone who's been through the Canadian public education system. Yet we have such different outcomes; I believe education at any level has the potential to be worth everything and make a difference, and his view is cynical - calling it useless. It isn't useless - he would arguably be more successful if he paid attention in English class and simply engaged in reading and writing exercizes whenever possible. Then he would probably see that his show/content needs work in some areas, or it won't get much farther than it already has. He wants it to become a full-time job? Then time to listen to the critics and see them as potential viewers rather than denouncing them multiple times every episode and letting a couple fans blow smoke up his ass.

Re: Fearless Gear Review: LINE 6 SPIDER V

is there anyone disagrees with his opinion on the Line 6 Spyder V?

And what opinion is that? That Spyder V sounds worse than Spyder 3? Or that it sucks not to be able to change the settings while you record? Or that it's better to destroy a perfectly functional piece of gear, for it to end up in a landfill where it'll never decompose, instead of returning/donating it?

Have not played one.

That said, when he was doing the head to head comparison of a spider II on a standard model (most likely tweaked to sound its best) compared to stock factory pre-sets on the V, which is never a good comparison with modelling equipment, I felt the review was worthless not even considering his "angsty teen style".

It's like when someone compares two different pickups in two different guitars.... "how different does a JB sound from a Custom? Well I have the JB here in my gibson les paul classic, and the Custom is in my Squier Classic Vibe Tele Deluxe "....worthless as a comparison.

Re: Fearless Gear Review: LINE 6 SPIDER V

I also think it's a little disingenuous to call trashing a Line 6 Spyder a "Fearless Review". There's nothing fearless about talking crap about equipment that almost no one hold in high esteem. May I suggest another topics for "fearless" reviews? How about Boss Metalzone? Or better yet Zoom 505?

If you want to be "fearless" on the internet and show how unbiased you are, do a fearless review of an Axe-FX. But then don't cry when all the butthurt djent kids start unsubscribing...

He slammed the Mesa Cab Clone pretty hard too, even though he had high expectations for it

Good Metalzone review...

Re: Fearless Gear Review: LINE 6 SPIDER V

the dude does have a degree of bombast that is not typically found among people that review gear. it looks like he's been an engineer for a while and has seen a lot of gear and a lot of players... so he does have a little more insight than some. yet people that do reviews are typically pretty careful about what they say.

however, he's putting his time and energy into doing what he does. he can handle thing how he wants and reap whatever consequences, good or bad.

plus... who else caught the part where he paid for the product? sounds like it's his to do with as he pleases.

viewed on it's own, I found the video entertaining. he did some reviews of the Kemper and the AxeFX where I think he actually did some A-B with some of the amps being profiled. that was a cool approach.

No one argues that he can't do whatever he wants. It's more of a "moral justification" that is questionable...

some might suggest it's questionable to press one's own moral justification on the situation.

it's a product. a consumable assembly of wire and plastic with a finite shelf life. it has no impact the lives of 7B people if he throws away his money to try to get a laugh on a youtube video.

Fallacy of Relative Privation. There's other valid criticisms of what he does - the criticism that [he should use his resources for a more "moral" or "noble" cause than entertainment and therefore he is wrong] is invalid.

No one is pressing anything. I'm not calling to get him jailed, hung, or quartered. All I'm saying that there might be a better use of the limited resources than just waste.

the criticism that [he should use his resources for a more "moral" or "noble" cause than entertainment and therefore he is ]
a ******. Fixed that for you.

Who cares? If I buy the same amp, virtually never play it, then dig it out of my closet when I go to move, find out it it doesn't work and I throw it away, is that better or worse?

(Keep in mind I have to drive two hours round trip to recycle something like this amp.)

That does sound pretty bad. I have no doubt a old Peavey Bandit does a way better job.
The guy needs to chill though. The angry persona made him famous but he should spice things with that now and develop into something bigger than just a rant boy. He's better than that.
