Fender 12 string

I've been wanting an acoustic 12 string for about 30 years now. But it's hard to justify... they sound great on a few songs, but not something you would want to play all the time. But they are so much fun.

I saw this: Fender 12 String and at $200 looks like it might satisfy my need.

Anybody have experience with Fender acoustics? I know there are better brands out there - but I'm sure there are worse as well.

Is the bang-for-buck ratio good here? Or should hold out for something else?

Opinions?

Re: Fender 12 string

The Fender acoustics I've played have all been pretty well put together, with good action and workmanship. Never tried that one specifically though.

The thing with acoustics for me is this: I can pick up a $200 electric and a $2000 electric, and get them both to sound pretty good. Not so with an acoustic. The difference in tone and quality is much more readily apparent.

Thanks... this is what I was looking for - the little thing nagging at me in the back of my mind. I agree with you.

And I would rather buy an acoustic in the store - so I can play it.

I'll wait for the right deal to come along.

For a few bucks more, I'd recommend trying a takamine 12 string. I think you'll find its tone and quality more acceptable than a low budget Fender acoustic...

Re: Fender 12 string

I have Takamine classical acoustic-electric and I love it.

I have considered their 12 string... which leads me to another question that may require a fresh thread.

Pros and cons:

(1) A straight acoustic with a pickup like an SD Woody
or
(2) An acoustic-electric

The biggest difference I can see is that with option 2 I would have volume and eq control. But with option 1 I have more of a selection - especially with 12 strings. Just wondering.

Re: Fender 12 string

I think the best value in a 12-string these days is the Taylor 355. Add a pickup later if you need one. Great playing guitar that you'll treasure for a lifetime. Typically, the life-span of a $200 12-sting can be pretty short. The Taylor has some great technological features, and resale will be much better than the other guitars mentioned here. It's not cheap, but a better value in the long run.

I'd go with an acoustic/electric, but thats just me. I really like the convenience of a tuner and eq shaping.
