Fender, Jackson, and Charvel's New Heel Adjusting Truss Rods

What do you guys think about these? I've never owned a guitar with a heel-adjustable truss rod personally. I have worked on several of them, but those were the type where the neck had to be removed (worst idea ever).

Just looking at it, I don't like the look as well as simply having a small angled hole at the headstock. I'm not crazy about the cut they are making out of the wood below the last fret. It is ugly in that location. That also leaves very little wood below that last fret, and I'd hate to see it popping out of its slot after a few years. I may just be too pessimistic though. It might work fine.

I do like the fact that Jackson and Charvel have FINALLY moved the volume knob out of your way on down toward the bridge, which is why I am curious.

Any experience with these Heel adjustable rods?

It is better than having to take the neck off, but I like them at the head better

Re: Fender, Jackson, and Charvel's New Heel Adjusting Truss Rods

Agreed. I'll definitely take it over removing the neck, but adjusting at the headstock is best. I used to be a truss rod tweaker addict, but I've learned not to mess with it too much these days unless it really needs it.

I like it. I added a little channel on this body for ease of adjustment. Its a pro mod neck and a few years old so its not a new thing at all.

That isn't what the new ones look like. They have a notch cut out of the FRETBOARD where the adjustment wheel/nut is.

Ive had the spoke wheel adjustment on a few guitars Ive owned and it is hands down my favorite type of truss rod access. Its so easy and convenient to adjust when needed.

Re: Fender, Jackson, and Charvel's New Heel Adjusting Truss Rods

The spoke wheel adjustment is the best IMO. Can't strip it like you can a headstock adjustment (whether it be the allen key or nut style) and you can stick just about anything in there to adjust it. Been wanting a MusicMan for years because of this.

I think it's something they all should have done long ago.
I love mine and would love to have it done to my 2013 Charvel.

I have 2 with it and love it- no special tools, no neck removal, no stripping of nut

Re: Fender, Jackson, and Charvel's New Heel Adjusting Truss Rods

And lets add no annoying truss rod covers, and being able to make adjustments at tension. Damn I really need one... hah

Re: Fender, Jackson, and Charvel's New Heel Adjusting Truss Rods

Modern Fenders and Charvels already had no truss rod covers, and they could both be adjusted at tension.

Re: Fender, Jackson, and Charvel's New Heel Adjusting Truss Rods

Yes I am aware of the Fenders not having covers. Previously Charvels (current) had to be adjusted by taking the neck off.

But, any strat that has a locking nut (as 3/4 of mine do), getting in there to adjust at tension can be a pain due to limited space and then the strings getting in the way while turning. And we all know they wont line up perfectly vertical for us, so were forced to either put stress on the string or to have very little adjustment room before we can realign the allan key etc. Pinwheel adjustments make this much much easier in any given situation.

Re: Fender, Jackson, and Charvel's New Heel Adjusting Truss Rods

Sorry people if I bump this thread but I think it's better than starting a new one. I have a doubt about the spoke wheel on my new Charvel. I want to give the neck a bit more relief. Should I turn the wheel left or right when looking at the guitar with headstock north and body south (just to be clear  ). I thought it was left but I have a feeling of tightening when doing it, so I wanted to ask to be sure. Thanks.

Re: Fender, Jackson, and Charvel's New Heel Adjusting Truss Rods

I think it's something they all should have done long ago.

I had an electric solid-body ('Audition' brand sold by 'Woolworths' supermarket chain in the UK in the late 1960s, and was probably a re-badged Tiesco) that featured a heel truss rod adjuster. It wasn't recessed into the end of the fretboard, it just poked out from the end of the neck.

So the concept has been around for a long time.

Re: Fender, Jackson, and Charvel's New Heel Adjusting Truss Rods

Looking from the body up toward the headstock, the new truss rod should be "righty tighty, lefty loosey"

The measurements would confirm this. I was just surprised to feel more resistance in turning the wheel to the left than to the right. How could it be?
