Fender M-80 combo

Im not much for Fender guitars but I do like their amps. I was talking to a buddy of mine and we were talking about the M-80 which he at one point owned. He informed me that you can hook it up to a 4x12 which I was not aware of. I was just curious if any of you had any expirience with hooking the M-80 alone ore hooking it up to a 4x12 and how it sounds? I just remember when he had the amp alone playing it was LOUD so I can't even imagine how loud it is set up with a 4x12. So some more thoughts would be nice cause I got my eye on a used one for real cheap and can't play it because it needs to be shipped in from another store so. Thanks for the thoughts.

Re: Fender M-80 combo

I THINK we are talking about the same amp here. I had, back during the 80's, a solid state head called the M-80. It was covered in a grey fuzzy material. The one I had came with a matching 4x12 cabinet. The 4x12 didn't make it sound GOOD, I never liked the tone of that amp, but it was loud. That's why I bought it back then, another beginning guitar player who thought he had to have a half stack to play in the garage with a couple of other idiots. Sad thing is, I remember the guy at the guitar store trying to talk me into buying a Marshall Sivler Anniversary Edition JCM 800 combo amp. At the time my thinking was that for the same price the Fender was BIGGER. Boy, if I only had a time machine....

If I remember there were 2 different patch cord plug-ins on the back of the head, one for 8ohms and another for 16ohms (I think) Just be sure you plug into the correct one for your speaker cab.

Re: Fender M-80 combo

I can vouch for fenders grey fuzzy era. I had a Fender 4 x 12 cab in grey fuzz that was heavier than hell. I believe I had a Peavey Ultra 60 going into it....hated that amp with a passion but when I got it the the was terribly out of style and I paid less than a hundred for it.

This is the amp in question just to make sure were on the same page. Fender M-80 solid state combo amp with extension cab plugins. Im not planning on buying the 4x12 extension can right away im going to get that later on down the road possibly. The amp is only $99.00. and did you have expirience with just the amp alone and not hooked into a 4x12 and did it sound any better.

Re: Fender M-80 combo

Don't buy it. Buy a Vox Valvetronix or L6 Flextone instead....or a good tube amp. The M-80 is the epitome of BUZZ TONE....and not in a good way. The gain sounds like a Zoom processor plugged into a PA. Horrible.
I've plugged into them, and couldn't yank the cord out fast enough.
Anytime I've seen an M-80 halfstack or combo in a band situation, whoever's playing it has the worst tone of the night. Waste of money! Get a Valvetronix.

Re: Fender M-80 combo

ouch Gearjoneser, my first rig was a Zoom 505 into a Behringer PA:smack:

Edit: But it did sound like @ss ;)

Re: Fender M-80 combo

The Fender M-80 IMO is the most unfendery sounding Fender amp. It was the eighties and they needed a contemporary sounding amp in their line.Good Idea for the marketing dept, But the engineering dept. dropped the ball.:eek13:
