I look at these kind of purchases a little differently. I feel they are long term investments. I bought my Super Reverb (1968) about 15 years ago. I paid a little more than $500 for it. At the time if you shpped around I may have been able to find one for less, but look at what the RI is going for now and what you can get a used SF for. The SF may be a little more $, but will sound a ton better! A BF will cost about double the RI, but lets face it the BF SR is one of the best amps EVER!!

would the 65 reissue superreverb or bassman (+ some reverb) be the better choice?

But for versatility, I'd get a Twin, and some good pedals like Line 6 Verbzilla, a RI TS-9 or OD-808, and a decent compressor like a Dynacomp. Then you can get your SRV tones, country, rock, just about anything except metal. Just my 2cents.

I even play jazz gigs with it, just gotta know how to tweak it just right for the tone I need. It's just very very well suited towards blues and rock music.
