Fender Super Champ XD

Re: Fender Super Champ XD

I definitely want one... can't really swing it since I recently purchased a MESA 5:25 combo, but maybe someday.

Re: Fender Super Champ XD

Man, I'm back and forth between that and the 5 watter with the 8" speaker for home practice and doubling as a harmonic amp.

Re: Fender Super Champ XD

I have had one for 6 months or so - really, really nice amp! Loud enough for the house and the small gigs I have (church, small groups w/o drums) and the range of tones is cool. I like that it has many flavors of Fender as well as Vox, new Marshall, and hi-gain - and all sound pretty spot-on - on top of a "tube" clean channel 1!

I have been tempted by the Vox VT30 or VT50 but have not had a chance to play one; the trade-off would be more British sounds and less Fenders, waiting to get my guitars sorted out and sold down before I look at an amp...

Super Champ XD - go for it, you will not be disappointed!

Re: Fender Super Champ XD

Doesn't wahwah use some sort of Super Champ? Seems he does quite well w/it.

I may be off on that, so I'm happy to stand corrected!

Re: Fender Super Champ XD

Wahwah's is an old one, all-tube, more of a high-gain Deluxe than a Champ (experts correct me if I'm wrong).

Let me get this straight - this new one has a tube PI & output stage, plus what for the preamp - modelling? The Fender website says "solid state", but with all those options, I would think it must be modelling the gain stages, plus the effects.

It actually looks like a pretty cool amp. Our old singer is flying in from San Francisco for the big reunion gig in May. Obviously, she can't bring an amp, and this would be perfect for her. Maybe we should use the GC return policy to borrow one for the weekend. lol

I've got the Vibro Champ XD for home practice. I really like it. A good bunch of usable sounds, and it takes fuzz pedals well.

Re: Fender Super Champ XD

I've had one for the last several months. I've been playing around with it and like it a lot. My only complaint has been some buzzing from the cabinet -- I've got to get around to tightening up all the screws. I've compared it to my Silverface Princeton Reverb and stock the clean on the PR definitely sounds better to me compared to the SRXD on the first channel and on the champ setting (channel 2, position 1 on the selector knob). This week I replaced the Fender labled 12AX7 in the SCXD with a Sylvania and it seemed a little smoother -- its not a night and day difference for channel 1. Then I used the SCXD with the new tube as a head unit plugged into the speaker and cab of the PR and the difference between the two was narrowed quite a bit so a lot of the tonal difference was from the speaker and the cab. To my recollection, the PR cab and speaker seemed to have less mids and was more chimy. I've got to say I like the SRXD a lot and plan to use it out rather than the PR due to its versatility and to keep my PR in pristine shape.

Re: Fender Super Champ XD

The tubes are 1 12AX7 (Fender labled on mine) and 2 6v6GT's (ElectroHarmonix in mine, I've read others have gotten different tubes here). The preamp uses the 12AX7 and a DSP section for the amp models.
