Re: Fender Super-Sonic tried one out

I was jammin' on one (combo version) at the local shop.
Excellent amps, great review.

man...the more i read about this amp...the more it sounds right up my alley!!! and to find out that my fave local shop is going to stop carrying fender...aaaarrrggghhh!:smack: :laugh2:

Re: Fender Super-Sonic tried one out

I just stumbled upon this amp while combing Sweetwater.com for something else.

Sounds like a killer amp...especially for the cost !!!

Re: Fender Super-Sonic tried one out

The local shop here actually just got one. It doesnt have that white tolex though, its like a textured grey of some sort. Was the head/2x12 version. The cleans did sound pretty cool. One was that shimmery bright one, the bassman really added some umph when he switched it. Much bigger and rounder. The dirt channel didnt do anything close to metal.. maybe he didnt switch to the higher gain mode, but i was pretty sure he cycled through all the options. The highest gain i heard was a really dirty blues tone, but sounded pretty good. If you are a fender person, i think its a great amp.

Re: Fender Super-Sonic tried one out

I'm mildy curious about the texture & feel of the dirt channel. Is it similar to the Blues DeVille amps? I hope not...they feel WAY too compressed for me and the tone isn't "open" enough. There's very little definition when playing big semi-dirty open voiced chords (think Tom Petty & Mike Cambell) or more complex voicings like add 13ths or dom 7's. Don't get me wrong...it's serviceable, but I like those PV Classics a lot more! I didn't like the Pro-Sonic or the Tone Master all that much either. They're both just too bright, feels like someone's chuckin' razor blades at my ears unless I put the treble on 1 or 2.

Still...I've been debating about moving some stuff around & cutting down both the guitar & amp stash and the Super-Sonic is pretty high on the list.

Re: Fender Super-Sonic tried one out

seems like fender is trying to appeal to the recto heads (after a failed attempt with the MetalHead series IMO) yet why is there even a need for a vibrolux clean voicing?.. people who use tight high gain stuff usually go for a sparkling clean, saggy 6L6 voicing instead of a vibrolux sound.. seems like a silly combination.. and the clean channel doesn't have an adjustable MID eq?

if you get a chance, go and try out the amp yourself. It sounds like the guy at the store played it for you. mess with the two different drive setting and se how they interact with each other. I could easilly get teh heavy scoopped mid thing out of it. i don't use that tone much but it was there.

i want one so bad...

It sounds like the amp for you, based on all you've talked about wanting out of a Fender amp.

Don't forget, this is a Pro Tube Series amp, which is NOTHING like the Devilles or the Tonemaster. Those amps have a dog fart for distortion. The Pro Tube Series has a more complex gain channel, which is closer to a Soldano.
It's not exactly Marshall or Mesa-like, but it's tighter and more focused than anything Fender has done before the Pro Tube amps.
