finally bought a set of true Strat single coils...

Well, after living w/ the Dimarzio Injector and VVHB2 for a while, and recently purchasing a Hot Rails for the bridge of my strat, I finally decided to jump in and buy a full set of true single coils. Just felt like going back to an older, more basic sound.

I decided to take the plunge on some Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's pickups. I had played a $2600 Fender CS '56 Relic Strat (swamp ash, maple board) that had them in it, through a tweed Bassman, and it was just such a great clean, pure sound. I even liked the bridge pickup with no tone knob wired to it! Very reedy and dry sounding.

So after price matching, I walked out with a set of Fat 50's.

Put them in my strat (swamp ash, maple neck) with a 250K volume and two 500K tones and a 5-way switch and I'm very happy once I switched which input I was using on my tweed bassman.

About the only changes I'm going to make are: 1) a couple 250K tone pots, just to be more authentic to the original strat setup, and 2) a 3-way switch. I don't use the 2 & 4 positions much (that strat sound is just too overdone for me), and a 3-way switch would make it alot easier to get to the middle switch without switching past it.

Anyway, happy camper for the time being!

Club. Welcome to it.

Sounds like a Blackmore style might be for you. Forget about the middle pickup. Remove the spring from the 3-way switch to that it very easyly flips from position neck-only to bridge-only.

Removing the middle pickup (or putting in an empty cover) will also satisfy those who believe in magnetic pull from pickups.

I loves me some Blackmore! Purple, Rainbow, even some of the Blackmore's Night stuff. Love his tone and the laidback-ness when he solos alot of the time (listen to "Since You've Been Gone" by Rainbow... almost like somebody had to wake him up to do that solo... love it!)

Oddly enough, I'm really liking the middle pickup so far, so I think it's gonna stay...
