Finally got to plug into a Bogner

So I went to pick up my strat from the shop yesterday. I had it routed it for humbuckers (more on that later this week). While I was there, I was perusing a bit. It's a pretty small shop - maybe 20 feet wide, but it goes down a bit. Their new selection isn't bad by any means, but they do consignments, and great stuff is always there. Some good deals, some bad. There was a 1947 L7 there for IIRC sub 2k.

Anyway, while I was perusing, a guy was messing with a Bogner Uberschall that he brought in because he thought there was a problem with it. After he and the shop owner ascertained that it was A-okay, he was playing with it a bit, plugged into a Reinhold 2x12. Tone was pretty good, but not nearly as good as I had heard Bogners hyped to be on teh interwebz.

Just our luck - I happened to notice an Avatar 2x12 behind him that was built to Bogner OS specs. I convinced him to plug in, and after a bit, he stood back and let me play it so he could hear how it sounded. I grabbed a 80's MIJ Fender in Olympic White (sexay) with an unknown set of Bareknuckle single coils (more on that one next month).

ZOMG.

Seriously...

HORY SHET.

I had one of those moments, you know - you plug in, you start playing, and within seconds, you just stop because it sounds SO GOD DAMN GOOD. I said "wow" out loud. Many times.

I was in awe of how good it sounded. I didn't play too much on the clean channel - it was a sin to turn off that good of a tone. God, with just that guitar, I even need any pedals - it was all in my fingers. The bareknuckles translated my dynamics so well, that I barely even needed to touch the guitar volume to clean up. What a sound.

It was so good, that I convinced the guy who owned the Bogner to plunk down his card to buy that cabinet right then and there. I was flattered - it's always nice to know that you're not the only one that likes your tone.

Anyway, consider me a Bogner fanboi. And expect a NGD within a month.

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

I'd love to play some high end amps. The best stuff I've gotten to demo so far has been Mesa. What can I say? There don't seem to be a lot of boutique amp dealers in salt lake. If they're here, I haven't sound them yet.
I had better not go searching for Bogners to play though, I do NOT need more GAS.

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

I like the tone of the XTC plexi channel but as you guys know, its nice to have that fat grind once in a wile. My clean tone is a Fender Twin 75 or earlier. When I pluged into the Twin Jet I knew I found it. Its got the plexi tone and an extra grind channel for those chuga chuga tunes. Its also simple, not a bunch of junk added into the amp to screw up the pure tone. With my 2 2/12 vin30's cabs its pure tone sex. If I want an even thicker fat tone I hit the vintage switch on the cabs and presto, fat vintage clip tone at a lower volumn. For me the Twin Jet is a god send.

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

I've been lucky enough to plug into a few Uberschalls and man they were awesome, if I was ever in a gigging band again I would have a tough choice between a bogner and an old pittbull.....

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

The Ubbers are nice..... The Extacy is the way to go IMHO. Way more versatile & a lot more options. I have a good buddy that has both... He has only had the Extacy a few months but man he loves it. Me..... well I like my Shiva but if the Xtacy fell into my lap I would take it.

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

The XTC would probably be too much for me. I'm a set it and forget it kind of guy - my amp only has three knobs. The uber is really nice, and if I were going for a modern hard rock/metal sound, I'd go for that over the Uber. Or maybe a VHT.

Anyway, yeah. It was amazing. I wonder how much of it was the cab. Maybe I need to compare my cab to other cabs. Either way, Bogners are magical.

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

Tempted by a Shiva but it costs as much as a vintage... well pretty much anything.

There's one on my local craiglslist - 6L6 model with reverb - for $1500. Pretty good deal IMO. They can be had pretty cheaply.

I payed less for my 1964 Super Reverb :)

ETA: but then it's not very METAL :headbang::headbang::headbang::chairshot:chairshot

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

That's about what I paid for my Shiva. It depends on what it is. Mine is a 1 12" combo with El34's. Its a really good sounding amp. If I had to do it all over again I would have gotten a head. The combo is way to heavy where a head and cab is a lot more manageable. the head also has an Ohm switch where my combo will only accept either 1 8ohm or 2 4 ohm extension speakers. The heads have a touch more versatility & you can adjust your voicing by using different cabinets. I am waiting for an XTC for the right price and I think I will go for one. has to be the right price though. there was one here (Head and cab) the guy wanted $2800 for the head alone! yikes! way too much for a used head IMHO!

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

I've plugged into my Ecstasy almost every day for 10 years. I still like it as much today as I did the first week of owning it.....probably even more.

It's like the entire history of Marshall packed into one amp, and then some. And cabs are a huge part of the overall sound quality.

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

I played an Uberschall through an Orange 4x12 cab at Guitar Center. It sounded too thick and modern. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it was missing the Marshall bite. Is that what the Uberschall is aimed at or was it the cab making it sound heavy with not much bite/presence? I really wanted to like it, but just didn't. My Shiva boosted seems more aggressive and can cut through the mix. I'd love to demo an Ecstasy, just for comparison purposes.

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

Nice! I just can't imagine what the Uber should sound like.
I'm glad you experienced the same ZOMFG shock I did.

That Shiva I tried (2x12 6L6 combo) just blew me away. And I tried it with a stock import G&L Strat.

I've never heard anything like it since. Magical, three-dimensional, and the most harmonically-rich overdrive I've ever heard.

Glad you joined the fanboi club! :D

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

The price on Shivas is dropping. Everything really, but Shivas aren't selling so well for $1500 anymore. I just let a mint newer model go for $1275. I only paid $1300 about 8 months ago.
Awesome amp. Best clean ever. Gain is good up to hard rock, but not tight or articulate for the faster stuff.

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

The Uberschall is no joke. And if you thought the 2x12 sounded good, just imagine if you plugged into the uberkab :D

Re: Finally got to plug into a Bogner

But I just changed, I don't want to jizz my pants :(

Better not plug into an Uberkab then! ;)

The Uberkab sounds SO fat and HUGE. I've got the Bogner OS2X12, as well as Marshall 1960A and B cabs. But the Uberkab puts them all to shame. I don't like hauling mine, because I want it to stay mint. I've already put a nick in there that I had to glue back down. At any rate, the tone of the Uberkab is such that I choose to take my chances and haul it to gigs anyways. I was gonna take my OS2X12 to tomorrow night's gig, but as usual -- it's gonna be the Uber there (with my XTC Classic sitting on top of it).

BTW... welcome to the Bogner fanboy club! I've been a fanboy for about 12 years now. Finally picked-up a Shiva about a year and a half ago, and then sold it about a year ago when my XTC fell into my lap (paid $2200 for it mint). It took my several weeks of tweaking to get the XTC the way I wanted it. Whereas the Shiva was a simple set-it-and-forget-it type of amp. Both are awesome amps. I also had a friend's Uberschall Twin Jet over at my house and it rules too. I wouldn't trade my XTC for one. But I have considered selling my VHT Pittbull Ultra Lead and picking one up. Actually, at the present I'm thinking of selling the Pittbull and picking-up a 20th Anniversary Shiva.
