Finally tried a Tiny Terror

I've wanted to try one for a long time. I'd like to have an Orange sound available for recording, but not enough to actually buy a big Orange. I thought the Tiny Terror would fit the bill. But I was quite disappointed. It seemed weak and muddy, and like the knobs didn't do all that much. It was the quietest 15W amp I've ever played. I checked to make sure it wasn't on the half power mode, and it was not. To me, it just sounds like a big version of a crummy small practice amp; it just felt and sounded like a really cheesy/cheap amp, without much love put into its design. I've heard a lot of people talk about loving these amps, but does anyone else out there feel kind of like I do?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt this way. A co-worker let me borrow his and raved about it. I felt pretty much the same as you about it after playing it. It seems like a good backup amp in case your main rig craps out at a gig, but that's about it.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

That's kind of odd, I've got a TT and a DT and both sound great? The TT is my second one, and both have been Made In Korea versions just for the record. Whilst the lack of full eq is a limitation, there are many usable tones and the only thing that knocks a few points off for me is the lack of an effects loop. I must add though I do play mine through an old Orange 4 x 12 loaded with G12H30's... sounds huge. I have tried through a 1 x 12 and I agree that it sounds average at best, but through a big cab it can get loud.

Hmm this might be the key. My co-worker played it through a 4x12 loaded with vintage greenbacks and I was using a Marshall 4x12 loaded with G12T-75's.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

I want a tiny terror combo pretty bad. I dig the way they sound, I plugged one in once. key is to krank em, they like fuzz pedalz, very dynamic amp:

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

They're just alright IME. I had one for about a year and a half and it got used on a few records but realistically it lacks balls and punch. It worked for thinner, twangier stuff, but it really has no low end 'push' or low mid thickness to it. My 5150 on lower gain settings usually ended up sounding better for most tones.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

I havent tried the TT or the Dt but I have tried the Jim root terror and I thought it was pretty good for the price.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

Didn't dig the one I tried, but I'd find a use for it if the chips were down.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

I was completely underwhelmed by the Tiny Terror. Such a misleading name for an amp

thats voiced IMO for Classic Rock. In that $400-$500 Low Watt Price Range, you can get

more Bang for your Buck elsewhere (2 Channels, 3 Band EQ, More Gain on Tap, FX Loop).

It wasn't bad yet it didn't inspire me to wanna lay down the dough for one.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

I kinda felt meh about it too. I liked it a lot the first time I played it (cranked :D )and over time it slowly has gotten worse and worse. It's not cheap here either (for what it is) and you can get much more for your money going through another company.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

I am glad I am not totally nuts.

The one I tried was a combo, and I tried all sorts of settings. I went straight to full blast, and only turned it down to see if it sounded better that way; it didn't.

I was hoping for a one trick pony that just sounds roughly like an Orange amp, not for a versatile amp to use all the time. Sure, it's a usable amp if nothing else is there, but I didn't really find even one thing that I thought it did well.

P.S. This isn't a "you're just used to higher powered amps" thing either, because my main amps are a 12W Princeton and a 15W Ampeg.

i have tried one and I loved it to bits, at the time the only reason I didn't buy it was because my HT-5 came in at a cheaper price and it was a combo, as where with the tiny terror I would want a seperate head and cab combo.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

thanks for the heads up on these "meh" reviews from yall, cause my finger is on the trigger for the orange tiny terror combo, and my finger tends to slip at any given time ;) I definitely respect yall's reviews and its not like I played the amp for hours. I mean a sound guy etc...

I really just want a lightweight combo that sounds great. the fender pro junior has a lot of raves about it so I may get that since it weighs 20 pounds. Jeff beck cannot be wrong! Ill do this 12" speaker mod and something else when I get it in a few years (it can take me years to save for purchases over $500 and I am not super excited about combo amps since I listen to downtuned heavy rock mainly but I dabble in emo/bl00z) http://www.tonedog.com/fender_pro_junior_mods.html

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

I never understood the adulation about it. Even though I played one often at this one music store, it never struck me as a great amp or anything. It's nothing compared to the Rockverb MKII or even as good as the AD 30. I don't get it either, but I guess there are people out there who think it's awesome.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

I'll be the dissenter and say I goddamn love my Tiny Terror. I was just saying the other day, I like it more and more each time I plug in. Different strokes, I guess.

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

I like the Tiny terror, enough that I built a clone of one. With Mercury Magnetic transformers

Re: Finally tried a Tiny Terror

Where some guys hear "flat and muddy" I hear "warm and compressed"...

It's got less presence than a blues jr or night train, and I hear a smoother saturation vs the Tweaker's brit mode, and it doesn't break the bank. I like how it sounds with a strat.

It's more vintage sounding than the gain I get from my crunchbox + drri... and in fact I've had my eye on a DT for a while... but saving for an AD30 sounds even better
