First Amp Day for my Brother

Our Neighbor Totoro
My brother Mike first started learning to play the other week and so for his birthday I got him a cheap practice amp.

For $41 shipped I got him a Marshall MG15CDR. It's got a really weak spring reverb but it's on there. I tested it briefly today and the distortion isn't very smooth and it's kinda gutless but I guess it is what it is, and it definitely sounds better and looks cooler than the Crate GX20m amp I started with years ago.

It's cool, it's quiet, there's no distracting amp voices or FX or switches, it's light and portable, it was cheap, and it even sounds OK. Perfect beginner practice amp. If he can make that amp sound good then he'll appreciate good amps all that much more later.

Plus this amp was featured in the anime "K-On!" as the main character's amp.

Anyways my brother likes the amp a lot. I hope it'll inspire him to learn and play well.

Re: First Amp Day for my Brother

I still have my MG30FX and it has served me well for years. At times I think about even buying the foot switch if I could find it since this is a old model.

Re: First Amp Day for my Brother

I still have a MG30RCD that was the 2nd amp I ever owned. I had it modded for an external speaker out so that I can use it as a head if I want. When run through a decent speaker, it does a pretty good metal / industrial tone. I also use the internal speaker when recording if I need a nasal, ratty tone for an overdub
