Fishman Fluence Modern Humbucker -any updates, it's been a couple of years

Re: Fishman Fluence Modern Humbucker -any updates, it's been a couple of years

In all fairness, I do owe you an answer. It is this:
I have a theory(probably a pup 101 theory) (don't know if it is right or not but my ears say it is) that each of those screws on a pickup create a little magnetic field that can pickup the vibration of the string closest to it. So if I set up the guitar so that each of these screws is as close as possible to the string without resulting in buzz or distortion I can optimize the output of each string so that it is clearly defined when I play it along with the other strings. On the opposite end of the spectrum if the pickups are lowered and away from the strings the small fields created by each screw blend into one large field and the string that vibrates the most gets the highest output and the result is a mushy rather than defined sound. And I will not define mushy, you should be able to figure that out on your own.

The thing is, most of the time you can lower a (passive) pickup and it actually sounds brighter/clearer.

I guess it all comes down to the pickup and individual preference.

(Now if that ain't a generalist cop out I don't know what is.)

that really all it comes down to for everyone. it's why there are so many brands and models of all these types of gear. one man's treasure is another man's trash...and vice versa...and all points in between.

Hey Darth Phineas,
In your review of the classics you said you wired yours up for coil tapping. Would you mind posting or PMing me the wiring diagram you used to set up coil tapping it didn't come with the Moderns I bought?

nothing to it, daddy-o. I just went by the instructions, which does require a quick and easy solder point on the bottom of the pickup.

for my testings, I've been going with the outer coil. I do think it's cool that not only can you choose either coil (which is common), but you can use a on-off-on switch to go between both coils from the same switch.

For anyone who may be new to this thread or missed Darth Phineas Reviews of the Fishman Fluence Humbuckers be sure to take a look:

Mucho Garcia, par favor. Or something like that....I need more Taco Bell to power my universal translator.

And I should have the Devin Townsend set installed within a week.

Re: Fishman Fluence Modern Humbucker -any updates, it's been a couple of years

I have two stratocasters set up with Fishman Fluence, one les paul (setup with classic), and just finished one telecaster setup with the Greg Koch telecaster Fishman Fluence set.

They all sound fantastic and quite!

However, I like the tone/sound of Zexcoil for my stratocasters better than the Fishman Fluence.

A critical point on the Stratocaster set-up, if you choice is to use the battery backplate power supply, the cables are too short and the wiring diagram that comes with the battery pack for that setup is hard to read!!

Fishman has already received an e-mail concerning these problems, and fixed that problem on their web site..

A different point on the 'universal' battery setup, is that you have to drill a hole in the cavity cover plate, so get a cheap replacement to drill not your original.

Hey Leevc5 I followed you over here from the Fender forum where you posted the Darth link and mention the Seymour Duncan Forum as a good place to start gather data about these Fluence pickups. You are right there is a lot of stuff on this link whereas searching around the internet the information is really scattered. This place seems like at least a central starting point and also a link with people who have really used the pick ups and am encouraged that everyone is very positive about them. I am not ready to pull the trigger yet but am getting very close. maybe after I hear what Darth has to say about Devin Townsend Set. I found you on the Gibson forum too but there was not much activity there. Too bad Fishman doesn't have a forum it seems kinda unethical to be talking about Fishman products on a Seymour Duncan Forum.

Re: Fishman Fluence Modern Humbucker -any updates, it's been a couple of years

Welcome, stancaster.

Usually, this forum is less snooty than some others when discussing the products of other manufacturers. Actively slagging those other manufacturers is off limits - even if they truly are crap.

The SDUGF has an unfair advantage in the shape of Frank Falbo. Think of Frank as a missing link between traditional pickups such as Seymour Duncan and the Fishman Fluence approach.

Re: Fishman Fluence Modern Humbucker -any updates, it's been a couple of years

Hey stancaster.

Since they literally only take a few minutes to swap out, I'll be able to get them installed the same day I get them and will have some preliminary impressions up soon.

I'm happy to hear I can be of help.

Re: Fishman Fluence Modern Humbucker -any updates, it's been a couple of years

I'm not a clip maker but when I bring home the hollow-body and and run it into the XTC and Fenders I'll have a few impressions for you guys. Frank doesn't have splitting as an option on mine though, seeing as I wouldn't use it anyhow it seemed superfluous.

Thanks Darth,

Wired my Moderns for coil tapping yesterday and it is an interesting option but does not add a lot to what the Fluence pickups already offer. When I did a coil split on my SD SH-2n it really added an interesting new tonal option.

Hey Darth, when you going to get those pups? Are they being delivered by camel or something you've been talking about getting them since April 6th? Do you think you'll be reviewing any of the Fluence Stratocaster pups? Thanks, Stan

Good question. Maybe in the next week or so.

The Strat pickups? Depends on Fishman.
