Floyd-equipped Carvin DC127 without a locking nut? Will it be ok?

I also posted this over at the Carvin BBS but thought I'd also ask here as well...
So, yesterday I went to our local Carvin dealer to look at some DC127 and DC135 guitars.

3 had a Wilkinson and the fourth, a DC127 had an Original Floyd Rose but an ordinary, non-locking (plastic?) nut.
Naturally it had the Sperzel tuners.

I tested it out for a little, used the tremolo a tad for some moderate vibrato (which a Wilkinson could also have easily handled) and seemed ok.
However I do have concerns about how it could handle further whammy use/abuse.

It didn't help either that out of the same-priced four the owner picked that one to hand me and said to prefer it over the others.
It's also a tad interesting how he quoted me the same price for that and the Wilkinson equipped ones (the OFR should have been more expensive than a Wilkinson)...

Sound and feel/play-wise, well, loved it.
It didn't have a top, all four had either Tobbaco or 3-tone Sunbursts while that particular one had two pu-split switches that actually made a world of difference tone-wise.

What I'm trying to say is that other than the non-locking nut issue, I loved that thing... :32:

You could always have a tech install a locking nut pretty easily, even if its just a quick install behind the existing nut.

Yeah, I know, what I'm asking is whether I would need to do it or would the current nut (turns out it is Graph-Tech) will suffice...

You will be fine. Logically, a standard trem would allow more room for tuning error and string movement - now, a locking nut with a standard trem would not be good!

I always prefer a locking nut.

The Floyd with sperzels and graph-tech is fine for light to medium trem work.
But, I woudn't trust it enough for heavy trem work. Dive bombs, pull-ups, heavy whammy.

Re: Floyd-equipped Carvin DC127 without a locking nut? Will it be ok?

I can pull up and dive bomb with my DC-127T with the Sperzels, Graph-Tech, and Wilkinson. It works well and sounds great with the PATB-1n/-PATB-3 combo.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the graphite nut will wear out. Mine's already worn to the point where I'm getting a bit of buzz on the 1-3rd frets. It's not horrible, but if you plan on using the guitar for heavy trem work, go with a locking nut on that Floyd.

Re: Floyd-equipped Carvin DC127 without a locking nut? Will it be ok?

From what I've gathered here it looks like at lest at first I'd be able to get away with it.
If I decide to go with this one I'll probably also install a Tremol-No or sth similar to switch in dive only until I get used to it some more (kept throwing it sharp with my palm pressing on it) and, well, it's gonna be a 1500€ guitar
(2200$, yeah, I know, after 30% off it's MORE than double what you'd pay for one over there, woe is me huh?),
when the time comes for a new nut I'll just decide whether it's gonna be a new Graph-tech, LSR (if I could install one in a 12" radius that is...) or a locking nut...

Untill the nut wears it will stay in tune as well as one with the lock nut. I have owned Carvins with both and I abuse the heck out of the bar.I always was worried on the nut wearing but had several of those set ups I played for years and I never had a problem.
