Floyd rose action adjustment question.

Despite all my guitars' being Floyd-equipped guitars, I never got a definitive answer for this.

Do I have to detune my guitar before making an action adjustment? I've heard anecdotes that not doing so would damage the knife edge, yet have also heard a reputable source say otherwise.

So please guys, share me your experiences.

Ive heard it both ways. Some say it will damage the edges, some say it won't if they are made of hardened steel. I think if you adjust it once and then leave it, you'll be ok......I don't do it under tension though, just to be safe.

In the wood screw version, this would actually cause wear on the hole. In the stud/pivot bushing/insert version not much of a problem.

Like I said, if you adjust it once or twice and leave it, you should be ok. If you're gonna go back and forth with it, you'll probably want to do it while the bridge isn't under tension or you'll damage the knife edges

No you can leave it tuned to pitch when adjusting height.

Remove tension before any adjustments to a Floyd just to be on the safe side. Trying to hurry up and get things done quickly is almost never the best option. Look at what you are doing , raising and lowering the screw that the bridge rests on . The strings are pulling the bridge forward with significant tension. Some people adjust truss rods with the strings under tension. Just because someone says something is right does not make it true , this is really important when reading internet forum posts.

I really have no problem with adjusting truss rods under roughly 50 of tension, and my necks are as thin as paper. I do detune the g and d strins for easier access, though.

I adjust my floyds under tension . I don't really see how it would hurt the knife deges . The bridge piviots on the knife edges every time you pull up or push down on the trem . its under tension when you do this so how is raising the stud it rest on and causeing it to piviot a little any different than when you use the trem ?
Btw i've been using floyds since the 80s and never had any trouble with them . that doesn't make me an expert .Just sharing my experience

i always detune my a bit..just so there isnt as much tension/stress on the knife edges..
