Floyd Rose issue

Gjys, i'm having a bit of a problem with a Floyd.

The neck angle is virtually non existent, so when the trem sits flush with the top, the action is way too high: almost 3 millimeters. Total waste of space, right? ;)

There is no recess under the trem. so my idea was to make a neat little template and recess the entire unit, bushing included. That way the trem can still be decked (set up flush with the flat parts of the recess) but is simply set up lower in the body, allowing for more freedom when adjusting the action. Add a little block between the trem block and the back of the trem cavity so it really do only DOWN and not up, and the guitar SHOULD work just fine.

What do you say?

Re: Floyd Rose issue

Neck might need shimmed,,,,,,,,,,and, are there any shims under the bridge-saddles currently/stock?

This a Charvel?

Re: Floyd Rose issue

There's no shim under the saddles.

The neck can use a shim but frankly... I don't wanna.

Not a charvel. It's a guitar I'm building for a customer of mine and he changed his mind halfway through the build...

Take a regular template for a FR recess (StewMac has them, for example), drop it the 3mm, block the trem block.

Done.

Keep it simple.

Edit: never liked how the EBMM Axis was designed for the trem to set flush. I prefer a floating trem to, well, you know, float. I didn't want to do a shim, so I recently put a recess in mine:

Yeah stewmac. Trying to get their stuff here is a pita. But my idea is clearly a fine one. Gives me confidence to tweak and route.

Re: Floyd Rose issue

I believe the EVH Wolfgang has a slight recess for the trem to sit in the body but it's still decked for dive-only operation. I personally have no problem with that. If it works, great. Not a fan of full floating trems myself.

I think builders have been recessing Floyds for about 30 years now. Are there no suppliers over there with ready-to-go templates?

If not, the specs can be found on floydrose.com

Re: Floyd Rose issue

I'm a stubborn ****. I don't want the entire unit recessed. Just the plate and a few mills of the backside. Gonna make my own template. Will show y'all the results when I am done :)

Re: Floyd Rose issue

Kamanda - thanks.

Orpheo - are you making it difficult just for the sake of being able to say you made something difficult? lol! ;)

Re: Floyd Rose issue

Sell him the story that Yngwie (or any other "manly" player) has his action higher than that, and you are set.
Lol. That might actually work.

BTW. I have once tried to set the action as high as Yngwie claims to set and found that he's, for lack of a better word, full of ****. Not because it would be very hard to play, mind you, but because it would show in too many obvious ways ( saddles, pickup height compensation, string height).

Re: Floyd Rose issue

I have no idea how high yngwie has his guitars set up. The third g is, I want it low for the sake of low.

What he claims: 4mm high e, 7mm low E... that's from string to fret
What random guy on internet claims to get from his tech: 1.6mm and 1.9mm

TBH, we may never know for sure lol. Anyway, you may have to shim all the other saddles to compensate.

Re: Floyd Rose issue

ok 7mm is literally 3.6 times taller than my gutar is at on the 6E.. cant see how someone could play it other than a slide

Re: Floyd Rose issue

I set my 10-52s to 1.65 and 1.8-1.9 and call it "low".
