Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

Anyone with Jubilee experience think they can compare the Appetite tone to what comes out of a Jubilee?

Is he still doing the mod? I didn't think see him advertising amp mods on the S.E. website.

Don't know, but there's a chance he might be getting a few emails from me at the end of may when I'll have worked a full time internship for almost a month :laugh2:

What I REALLY wish is that someone would "spill the beans" on everything that his mod entails, that way I could 1) hackjob it myself or 2) not have to pay shipping :)

Just kidding about the shipping...

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Tim Caswell also co-design a Soldano preamp.
The Soldano/Caswell motorized midi preamp? I think that's the same guy.

The funny thing about that story is that there was hundreds of killer modded Marshalls floating around Hollywood at that time. There were at least 10 popular techs who were hotrodding Point to Point Marshalls back then. I've heard all these stories about Caswell, Lee Jackson, Jose Arredondo, Alan Cear (Amp Shop), and Doug Roccaforte.
Those modded Marshalls have always been a passion of mine, and I've owned several really good ones. Sometimes when I see collectors selling amps on Ebay, saying they've been restored back to stock, it almost bums me out, since they may have made a killer sounding Marshall sound worse.

That is indeed the same Tim Caswell...I was wondering how long before somebody noticed that!

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

Hey Christian, what do you think? Sound like the amp for me instead of a Jubilee? hahaha :)

Well you have saying that you want a Jublie, and Theodie has a Slash signature head, and flank has been looking at amps, and ledzep29 is on the amp hunt, and I have suggested Plexi Marshalls to ALL you you guys...modded with at least a post phase inverter master volume and maybe a gain stage and an FX loop...this is where THE tone is...I still maintain that Marshall amps started going down hill around the time of JCM 800's...the 800's are cool amps, but if you want a killer clean AND a great nasty tone get a modded Plexi style amp!

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

Man, i just love any of these types of stories. I love different tones. The possibility of something different or rediscovering an old gem always excites me!!

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

I remember during that time (mid-late 80's) that Lee Jackson was running his advertisements on KNAC and KLOS rock radio stations in LA. There'd be this ominous voice describing how his mods were "BUILT TO BLAST." In the background, you'd hear Paul Gilbert playing riffs and scary sweep arpeggios. It's pretty funny that the idea of modding Marshalls for 'metal gain' got so popular, Lee Jackson actually had radio ads for it!

I have a Slash sig and I am Jonesing (no pun intended) for a modded Plexi!!!
BTW, I was wondering why I couldnt nail Slashes tones with just the 2555SL. Some of the tones I couldnt get close to with it.

Not really. It can come close but, there is still something missing.

Hmmm... You and Christian got me thinking...

What do you think would be a better bet: modding a 1987 Reissue Plexi head, or a JCM 800 2203/4?

Well, I am gassing myself!!! I am considering getting a 1987 or a 1959 reissue or, just buying a Voodoo Vplex. I would ask Christian about the 800's. I think some of the early ones are similar to the Plexi. If so, It would just come down to price. I love the look of Plexis though.

well the JCM 800 2203 is the JCM 800 version of the JMP 2203 which cam out in 1975...they were Marshall's first Master Volume amp...I much prefer a Plexi head or a pre 1975 JMP...I want my Marshall to have 4 imputs and no factory master volume. The stock master volume makes the pre-amp crunch a post phase inverter type will let the power amp wprk hard and make some power amp crunch as well...it's just a better design and IMO sounds better.

IMO, by about 1975 Marshalls just lost something...I much prefer the 74 and earlier amps, as for which is better, it's matter of opinion...I wopuld much rather have a 1987x. Keep this in mind though...you guys are all talking about really hot rodding the amp in question, I just want a good master volume to get crunch with out loosing my hearing.
