well the JCM 800 2203 is the JCM 800 version of the JMP 2203 which cam out in 1975...they were Marshall's first Master Volume amp...I much prefer a Plexi head or a pre 1975 JMP...I want my Marshall to have 4 imputs and no factory master volume. The stock master volume makes the pre-amp crunch a post phase inverter type will let the power amp wprk hard and make some power amp crunch as well...it's just a better design and IMO sounds better.

IMO, by about 1975 Marshalls just lost something...I much prefer the 74 and earlier amps, as for which is better, it's matter of opinion...I wopuld much rather have a 1987x. Keep this in mind though...you guys are all talking about really hot rodding the amp in question, I just want a good master volume to get crunch with out loosing my hearing.

Yeah, I understand your point.

So long as the amp can get as much gain as on Appetite for Destruction, I'm all set. I'm not a gain freak, and I'm upgrading from a crappy AVT 50, so anything will be a major improvement. As you know, my favorite bands dont use extreme gain settings (STP, GnR, stuff like that).

I guess it comes down to price then, if there wont be a major difference in tone between the 1987 and the 2203/4

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

I actually like his Use Your Illusion sound better... what did he use to record that? I think he said he used SD Alnico 2's in an interview somewhere... no idea about amps/guitars for sure.

Also, how does his marshall signature amp compare to the "stock #39" amp from appetite? Similar modifications or something entirely different?

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

As glad as I am to finally know the truth (the last thing I had heard was that he double tracked with a modded JCM 800 and something else), I'm really crushed to know that I'll never reach his tone. Hell, I played a mahagony bodied axe with an A2P through a JCM 800 last time I was at Guitar Center and the tone wasn't even similar to Slash's. Thanks for the info though!

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

screamingdaisy, damn! Best Post here since I joined SD Forums. Very Very interesting story!

Could someone continue this thread and get us the Les Paul Forum post with PICS and everything (if there is) ...please!

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

Oh! I found the pasted LP forum post. Missed it the first time, my bad ;)

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

dammit how annoying is it that the les paul forum not only making you register to read the posts, but then making you wait while your account is accepted?

im surprised this thread hasnt been vaulted yet, its definetly vault-esque material

I think you only need to register if you're trying to access a few of the forums in there- like the Amplifiers or other not directly Les Paul related stuff.

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

Great story, and slash DID get those 2 les paul copies (I forget the name of the builder) before the appetite sessions, something happened and he was freaking out and his manager or somehting got these 2 Les Pauls whipped up for him.
I beleive pretty much everything there..EXCEPT the thing on the Jackson, YES he did own a Jackson (several?) but before they started recording he needed new strings so slash (being a dumbass.. sorry, but this is stupid) took scissors (or somehting like them) and just cut the stings off, and it threw the neck all funky and it barely atayed in tune after that (got that from an interview).
I don't hear any whammy bar use, but the guys probly just hearing some pre-bends or whatever.

the point is, kick ass story, I hope I find that Marshall and Slash rules.

What do you think would be a better bet: modding a 1987 Reissue Plexi head, or a JCM 800 2203/4?

Top pick: A Supertrem, that way you have the 4th preamp tube and that neato germanium transistor. BUT, please do not butcher a true vintage amp; build a homebrew or find an 800 with little vintage value.

Next: 1987/1959, add a post PI master, and you have a crunch machine. I was really surprised at how much of "the" sound is between the input and the post PI master. (Admittedly a 210 combo homebrew with Heyboer iron)

Next: 2203/2204. The MV and non MV sounds are different. IMO the MV is clippier and gainier, the non-MV is punchier. Cranked non-MV is the holy grail Marshall tone, though I still like the gain of the MV and modded MV amps. My main amp is basically a modded 2204.

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

Tim Caswell ....how old is he?? I need him in like 20 years. :)

Amazing thread, it makes me want it soo much more....VAULT.

Re: For Slash fans.....long post.

Holy crap!! I was just listening to nightrain and heard the "whammy" the guy was talking about in the first post. Although it (3:35 by the way...on the dot) sounds too subtle to be a bar, i think its just a vibrato..since slash is bending the note, it sounds like he holds the bend then brings it down a bit, thenup, then down a bit, then up again.

Yes, its vibrato.
