Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

I'll vote for a bad-@ss be-all-end-all single coil pickup!

I'm thinking that the humbucker guys can get a conversion plate if they want to put a single coil in a humbucker guitar, but the single coil guys can't put a humbucker in a single coil guitar without some big deal mods.

I like the idea of the Lil' 78 bridge pickup, but:

The idea of a tapped Strat neck pickup, designed for SRV tone when tapped (I think most people like SRV tone) and modern or more progressive sounds when fully engaged is tempting too.

Also, WHAT IF we came up with a pickup that sounds like a P90 when tapped / split and sounds like a virtual hot PAF when fully engaged?
edit: this could be HB or single sized

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

PATB with a 59/Custom wind (scatterwound) and an A2 magnet, maybe a degaussed A5. Also a neck pickup along the lines of the 59/Jazz hybrid (but scatterwound and just slightly potted) would be great.

As for single coils:
I like the idea of a neck and middle set, with a tapped neck pickup, but what I like more is a set of 3 single coils, with a tapped neck and bridge, the versatility of that would be great, and the in-between positions would still be quacky and such. Also, I would like to see a set of three alnico vintage rails, for the quack with no hum, but that's just me.

Really, whatever happens, i'll probably end up getting one, but I would like to see some love for single coils, and a matched set of three would be fantastic.

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

How about a "magnet variety pack" set? Just take the triple Alnico II Pro Staggered set, and put Alnico V's in the middle and ceramics in the bridge? The output wouldn't change as much (in terms of the coil). I'd buy such a set.

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

The only problem that I would have with that is that I don't like ceramic mags in single coils. Although a surfer-esque set with overwound and tapped neck and bridge pickups would be awesome.

That would be amazing! I can just dream of it now......

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

even with just a 5 way switch, it would be much more versatile than the standard strat:
5 - Neck full output, great single coil lead tone, smooth
4 - Neck tapped & Middle, quack like we all know and love
3 - Usually not the most used position, but would be nice in contrast to pos.5
2 - Like pos. 4 but brighter
1 - Bridge full output, not thin or icepick-y, good single coil bridge tone

In addition, it would be nice to have a brass baseplate on the bridge (a la twangbanger)

Also, you could just wire up two coil taps, more versatility, but it would be hard to change on the fly. Another option could be to wire the five way switch to where pos 5 was neck full, 4 was neck tapped, and 3 was neck tapped and middle, a good alternative if you rarely use the middle pickup by itself. Very versatile set anyway you slice it.

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

also, alot of people have been talking blackouts recently, and an active pickup set could be a nice change of pace. Active pafs anyone? An active 59/Jazz (or PG) neck and an active brobucker (or '78) bridge could be a winning combination.

I think it would be better without a brass baseplate, but other than that it sounds sweet!

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

I have never gotten to try a brobucker - I missed it. But I would love a Custom 5 with the growl of '78 (assuming it does have that sound I hear in the first 6 VH disks)

....for all I know that may a brobucker?

Either way I am in for whatever the reults are

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

Since there was a lot of hoopla about the Alnico 8 magnet last year, why don't we put Seymour on a mission to give us the ultimate A8 pickup??? Instead of simply putting an Alnico 8 magnet in a Custom, find the optimum combination to make Alnico 8 sound perfect! Some thought the Custom 8 had a bit too much string pull, so maybe back it down a little?

If it turned out to be the hottest and most toneful rock/metal pickup, it'd sell like crazy as a new addition to the Duncan line!

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

honestly what id like is a 10k/6.5k tapped alnico II flat pole heavy scatter tall magnet strat pup with 42 awg and a baseplate. kinda like the custom shop tapped hot tele bridge but for a strat. we did a bucker last time why not try a single coil this time.

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

I'm in but I am open to whatever you guys decide on. I have ideas that go along the lines of what's already been said here.

First a single coil that is FAT like a lil-78 or if it's possible to get something like that in a stacked version with quarter pounder poles or the single rail like the Seymour Duncan Hot Tapped or whatever it was called.

Second a bad ass distortion type pickup. The be all end all of distortion pickups. I would use the DD as a base to start from as opposed to the Dimebucker, although a DD with rails would be cool.

Third, a neck humbucker rails pickup that would be a great match for higher gain bridge pickups like a Dimebucker/Iommi/El Diablo. Base the tone like that Hot Jazz made for Jessica in that pink LP guitar maybe a bit clearer instead of rude tone like the Pearly Gates. I guess what I am trying to say is a cross between the Jazz and the Full Shred only hotter.

Re: Forum Bonus! Custom Shop Pickup for You!

LIL 78 THAT LOOKS LIKE A NORMAL SINGLE!

im gonna post this every few pages ^^ cause its just an awesome idea for us strat wielding EVH-er's (good tone-ers) ;P

and from just aobut EVERYTHING ive read its a great PUP even from the NON Evh fans.

I mustve missed the A8 hoopla! But I do have a Custom 8 in my 86 Kramer Focus 6000 that sounds amazing!!

BTW.. I said earlier that Im in for another special run.. However, I reviewed my needs and I have no use for a single coil or tele pup.. I need a couple of humbuckers.

That's not a bad idea either. The only problem is figuring out how to switch the tapped strat pickup. The best way would be with a Fender S-1 switch, where the switch is a button on the knob. I'd be game for one of those on my strats!

For humbuckers, I still think the A8 humbucker or a Custom/59 hybrid would be good Forum Pickups.
I even have a name for the A8 pickup. The Ace Eight!

I'd be all over this too...taking Duncan's most praised yet most cursed Humbucker..THE love it or hate it pup.... and addressing the issues most people have with it..even those who love it......lack of lows and muddy low E and A strings.....while (trying) to keep alll the excellent things about it...wonderful mid complexity....it's nice balance between "Vintage" and "distortion class" output, and its "cut thru the mix" ability.
I like this idea for the humbucker, a "Rev. 2" or updated version of the JB. Wasn't this the pup that started it all?

This is along the lines I'm thinking.:bigok: A neck and middle PuP set. The neck PuP being a Lil' hot but tapped so when you switch to the #4 pos. on the switch it taps the neck PuP so you can get that sweet chime Ala' Sultans of Swing ,Bell bottom Blues, Sweet Home Alabama etc. Switch it back to the #5 position and your back in SRV, Hendrix territory.
And this idea for the single coils id good too. Heck, how about a S-S-H set? I know the kids have some tooth fairy money laying around...
