Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

Today i found a Fender chorus amp i had been looking for... A Fender Ultimate Chorus amp.... I had an Ultra chorus amp version for 4-5 years in the early 90's and sold it after i got my 5150 stack and Classic 50... didn't feel i needed it after i got those amps... but i missed it... i bought a Princton Chorus amp about 7 years ago as i missed the Ultra but it sucks if you try and turn it up, cheap speakers cr*p out with the bass notes.... I've used Princton Chorus amps since 1988 or so for low level practices at home..... i've had 3-4 different ones over the years and the ultra..

Anyways it works good... That great SS clean stereo sound reminds me of some of Metallica's famous tone's on some of their older hits.... i think they used Roland JC 120's.... The Analog Chorus sounds lush.... Could also be used for some Police type tunes like Walking On The Moon..

It also has some pretty insane overdrive... a real hotrod... not that great for band work as these amps disappear in a mix like crazy... now if i can get a set up of A/B'ing this amp for cleans with my tube amps for dirt i maybe onto something

I paid a high price for it i think.. $350 Canadian for it... still not bad for a 2x12 really loud chorus amp!!! New i remember these amps around $850 Canadian in the late 90's...

Sad part is the past owner was a smoker and i can't stand the smell of the thing... I cleaned it pretty good about an hour ago but the thing stinks... (I have a Fender strat that smells the same and the smell has taken 5 years to die down, or maybe i'm just getting used to it...) I wiped down the speakers carefully to remove the dust and the back or the cab... I used a damp cloth to wipe the silver speaker grill down but it has yellowed... Not sure what i can do to tame the smell...

I hate the idea of keeping it in my room for months smelling like smoke.... makes me wonder if it's a health risk even if it's a real low one..

Solid state isn't so bad... Fender Solid state can be damn good IMO.

I love my libra :D

God, I love it when a piece of gear smells like smoke... I don't though (smoke that is)

ya for some tones i don't mind SS for sure..... i'll use tubes and/or SS no probs... I prefer SS for bedroom levels...

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

dam i found an issue with this amp already.... The reverb is completely dead... the plugs are plugged into the spring pan on the floor of the cab but other then that all i know is the reverb does not work at all... All i get the louder i turn up the reverb knobs is a slight bit of a hum noise..

I hope the store can fix the issue.. i'd like to keep this one... i have 3 months warranty on a used amp....

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

I bought one of these new years ago and really liked it and used for years before I sold it. I've been keeping my eyes open for another lately. My reverb tank went bad on mine in the first few months I had it but they replaced it. Maybe there was a problem and replacing the tank will be an easy fix for you. The Chorus and reverb both are beautiful on that amp too. I do agree with on the OD, its really rips but does kind of get lost in the mix.

ya for sure, when the Ultra Chorus amp version was the only amp i owned 15 years ago, the amp would get lost in a band setting... it just disappeared in the mix and you could not hear yourself. The OD channel is not that great for recordings either... too fuzzy... (I once knew of a guy once that played in a Southern style rock band that used 2 of these Ultimate amps in stereo... he loved it!)

The Fuzzy distortion is very cool to fool around with and i use it a lot to practice thru, but it's the clean tone i'm after on this one.... But that being said the sustain you can get out of the Ultimate Chorus on higher volumes is amazing.... i wish my tube amps would fade into amazing feedback as well as these SS Fenders..

Ya i'll take the amp back in today and see if they can send it out for repairs, or if they want they can refund my money... either way... but oddly you don't see many of these Ultimate Chorus amps come up for sale around here... they must of sold a pile of them in this town at onetime but people seem to hang onto them... So i hope it can be fixed as it may be years before i see another one....

Hopefully it will be an easy fix like the reverb tank. Let us know!

will do.....

one bad design flaw with these amps i had forgotten about is they tip real easy on the caster wheels!!!!! i almost fliped the whole thing on it's face a minutes ago just pushing it out of the way..... and the first thing that takes a hit is the plug/jack area if you are plugged in, or the knobs if nothing is plugged in.

Windex and paper towels. The fastest and easiest way to remove tobacco residue from most anything.

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

the store says they have some extra Fender Reverb Tanks in the basement and will try and fix the reverb tomorrow...

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

i was thinking that but was wondering if it would dry out the vinyl....

Vinyl is a man-made material. Windex will not affect it. Heck, windex doesn't even affect nitro finished wood!!

FWIW - on used amps, it is quite common for the reverb cables to be reversed - i.e. reverb amp output connected to reverb tank output and reverb amp input connected to reverb tank input. It is also common for the reverb cables to need replacement.

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

I have a Fender Ultimate Chorus too!

It's a great clean amp - very cool.

The distortion is very solid state, but can be brutal for metal type stuff. Sounds a little "grindy" when I try low-low gain settings for blues playing, especially when recording.

Mine's a 2001, the footswitch doesn't work.
clean / dirty works perfect.

When I switch reverb/delay on by itself, it works.

When I switch chorus / modulation on, it will turn on reverb / delay no matter what. It will also turn out all the lights on the pedal except the clean / dirty light.

My Reverb / Delay knob (rotary encoder) does not select the settings it should at all, it gives me random combinations of reverb and delay, with no linear progression in the length of delay or depth of reverb lie it did when it was new. VERY confusing.

The clean volume knob broke off, so I can't change the volume on the clean channel at all. Bummer.

The reverb / delay knob broke of as well, but I still have a nub I can turn to get totally random effects :chairfall

It's a good amp, not the best, but has served me well for gigging 6 years running

sounds like she has been thru hell... I'm sure a lot of the damage to the knobs must of been from the amp tipping forward face first.... These amps can tip so easy with the casters on the amp... I imagine a new foot switch should not cost you more then $60-$80 or so....

I never liked any of the DSP models Fender had myself.... I have a DSP equiped Stage 100 head and it sucks.... not only is it full of noise and hum, the DSP Effects rob a bit of volume when you turn them on.... cheap stuff... My Stage 100 head i plan to sell as soon as i can find a buyer locally

I really don't mind the analog chorus and real spring reverb models of the Ultimate Chorus and the Princton Chorus... better amps as far as Fender SS goes.. I think Fender made a mistake by marketing the DSP stuff.... Same with Marshall and their MG line....

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

parents gave me a message saying my amp is ready to be picked up.... so i assume it was an easy fix to get the reverb working... if they had to change the reverb tank i hope it was with the correct size/model.... they told me they had a box of tanks in the basement from all the broken SS Fenders they have thrown away

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

picked up my chorus amp and it has a different reverb tank in it... a larger reverb tank out of a different SS Fender... says it is out of a Fender FM65R... cheaper made reverb unit i'm sure but it works.... The store had a bunch of spare reverb tanks around and this was the one they stuck in my amp...

It works and sounds good... hope the new tank operates the same voltages and stuff in my amps Reverb circuit.... i have no idea how the reverb tanks work but mine is now a larger unit in it

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

Glad to hear it , as long as it sounds good to you thats all that counts.

yup... it sounds good so far... hope it lasts.. Any time i buy a used amp i expect problems... i have this theory that amps get sold for a reason and sometimes that is because they break down

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

found an Amazing jazzy sound! a nice mahogany necked Godin with a neck humbucker, tone controlled rolled back slightly... plus add some piezo... hmm!!!! a little chorus and reverb....

Re: Found a Fender SS Amp i wanted for cleans

This is too funny, all I had was my Godin LG when I had that amp. Mahog body and neck and it sounded great with it.
