Fretboard opinions

...On one hand, it's unique. On the other hand, they should select fretboards for Historics more carefully, and look for uniformity of grain and color.
This is what I'm thinking as well...Because it's so straight, it almost looks like it's two different pieces. But...I bet it still plays well...right? :)

Re: Fretboard opinions

Someone go post that pic at the Gibson forum. I would, but I've been posting to a bunch of brainwashed meatheads for a week now. I don't think the impact would be as great. It would be some good comedy.

I bet TC hates it!
I don't care for it (astheitcally speaking). I don't mind figure streaks in rosewood, it looks cool. But this is just a long straight, almost black line.

Same guy that went through, what, 3 ES's because he didn't like the grains?
Only 1, the brown ES-335. The other was a 333 that had a permanent marker on the top.

look twards the bottom of the pic, notices the distance between the a and d strings is far apart. and the distance between g and b strings is super small.
LOL, I pulled the strings apart so you could see the board better.

Indeed it does, I absolutely LOVE the fat U shaped neck, and the frets are nice and polished and smooth, plays great. I'm not too impressed with the BB #2 in the bridge though, it's a little whimpy for my tastes, I have some Goodwoods and an RS kit ready to go in it.

Whoever is waiting for a great deal to come along on a Gibson Historic Reissue 57' Les Paul Goldtop, get your credit card up in the bullpen to start warming up.
LOL, nah not yet. I'm going to hot rod it and keep it for a while before getting rid of it. I paid a little more going through a boutique dealer who picked out the most resonant one in the store, and it's 8.8 lbs, so it's light compared to most the 9+ pounders coming out lately, so I have to keep it for a while not to lose my ass.

Re: Fretboard opinions

that would really annoy me...but if it plays well who cares ... i guess

Re: Fretboard opinions

I just picked up a '57 Goldtop that I selected out of two and it was the lightest, most resonant, best playing, and best sounding one of the two. The funny thing was that the neck size/carve were very different on both of them. The fretboards were both very different as well: one had a reddish tint and more grain figuring and the other (which I went with) had a consistant rich dark color with not much visible grain figuring. No one should be surprised to hear this as due to Gibson's higher quantity quotas and dealer requirements. The perfect formula for bad quality and inconsistancy. You really have to pick through them.

Although, I do dig the tone and I consider the Burstbuckers 1 & 2 Gibson's better pups, I have to agree with TCarrot. The pickups can be overly bright if you are not careful with your amp.

Re: Fretboard opinions

That kind of thing bugs me too. It's one reason why I don't buy a guitar unless I see vivid pictures of the exact guitar I'm getting......or see it in person.

If I got that guitar for a dirt cheap price in the recycler or Ebay, I'd just suck it up and oil it extensively till the streak blends in. If I paid new Gibson prices, yeah, I'd ask for an exchange.

Re: Fretboard opinions

That dark stripe down the middle of the fretboard is just not right on an expensive guitar. And the fretboard looks very dry as well.

Re: Fretboard opinions

Personaly it really wouldn't make any difference for me, but i can see why its not ideal.

Re: Fretboard opinions

I find rosewood to be a boring wood, so I would want as much contrast as I can get. But to each his own.

Re: Fretboard opinions

I'm not sure if you're actually looking to do anything about it, but I've found that teak oil does a great job of slightly darkening rosewood while making it nice and slick (but not oily) at the same time. Plus, unlike lemon oil, it actually keeps the wood from drying out.

Re: Fretboard opinions

I like it. It adds character. Wood should look like wood. ...well, maybe I'll take that last statement back. I wouldn't be very happy with a big knot on the top of my natural strat...
