Friedman BE-OD pedal inbound...

Re: Friedman BE-OD pedal inbound...

Yep it's a great pedal. I've played it and it's everything they say it is. No pedal can take the place of a $3700 tube amp like Dave's. But Pete suggests that by saying it gets close enough that you can get this pedal, and not have to worry anymore about what kind of backline you end up with.

I've had my Smallbox for a year now, and had possession of a BE100 for several weeks, but yeah... i want the pedal for a "fly rig" and just to make my other amps sound like Friedmans. The Bogner Red and Blue pedals flat-out NAILED the tones of my XTC Classic, when running into my Fenders. So I'm hopefull that the Friedman pedal will be as good. Based on Pete's video, i believe that it will.

Also... going back to Pete's haircut... i have no doubt that he's trying to stay marketable in regards to being a hired gun on big tours for big artists. Many of us wouldn't be hired, even if we had Pete's chops... because we don't look the part. The entertainment business is very shallow. Gotta look good... or at least somewhat current.

Dammit, I wasn't in the market for another OD/Distortion/Preamp but this sounds so sweet! Thankfully, I can't grow my hair long enough to "do a Pete"

Pedal sounds awesome. He is also playing it through a fabulous amp! Friedman stuff is top notch.

I'm on the verge of pre-ordering one and being done with it!

Sounds fantastic. If Dave ever comes out with a Dirty Shirley toned pedal (DS-OD? ) then it might very well be game over in the drive pedal dept. for me. :D

Definitely love the Dirty Shirley and Mini DS, A LOT. In fact, I had been quite twiterpated by the BE100 for a while (after spending time with one), but lately I'm thinking that the Shirley will be my next amp. My buddy has a BE100, Smallbox, and Dirty Shirty. He spends most of his man cave time playing the Shirley and Smallbox in a stereo configuration.

I wonder though, if Dave would be able to really capture the essence of the Shirley in a pedal. It's a very big sounding amp (bigger sounding than the Smallbox and BE100), plus it's low-gain vibe is hard to capture as well.

Every time I've played one, I've been astonished with how pure and organic and evenly balanced that amp is, and how easily notes just fly out of the thing.

If anyone can do it, I bet Dave could.

Re: Friedman BE-OD pedal inbound...

Not ever having played any Friedmans, but being nuts about nearly every decent clip Ive heard of the BE, what makes you guys favor the Shirley? How would you compare/differ it from the BE?

Yeah, there's just something very special about the Shirley. I haven't played the full size Shirley yet, but I play the Mini at the store all the time. It's my favorite lunch box of all time by far, and I've owned and played a lot of them (including the Pink Taco). My music store buddy has a BE, Smallbox, and the full size Shirley... and if he had to pick his favorite it would be an easy choice for the Shirley. Just very organic and huge sounding. One of these days he's going to drop it off at my house for a few weeks of test driving. I'll likely want one.

He's also got several of the new Runts coming-in (with the BE pedals and more cabs). So I'll be curious to hear how those are. Should be here any day.

As always, I think that it's personal preference. My buddy prefers both his Shirley and his Smallbox over the BE. I had his BE at my house for a couple weeks and A/B'd it with my Smallbox a bunch, and I actually prefer the BE. It's a bit bigger sounding and just has an ever-so-slight "something extra" over the Smallbox. He says that the Shirley sounds bigger than both the Smallbox and the BE. We both chalk it up to the power tubes (5881s over EL34s), and of course Dave's circuit design.

Re: Friedman BE-OD pedal inbound...

I have not. I've played other Friedmans just not that one. I played the pedal yesterday, it's extremely good. I played it through a Morgan.

Yeah, the 5881s have alittle fatter tone and less focused then EL34s. Wish I could play thru different ones.. You are pretty much my resource.. haha So, thanks!!

I love factory pics like that... make me drool.... Wish one of those labels had my name and address on it!!

Ha ha! Well... my buddy is definitely the reason that I've been able to play and own so much cool gear. But that means that I'm permanently in debt to him... so there's the downside. This past year I've been helping him out in the store on Saturdays a lot, and have started sprucing up his small [free] web site as well. I think that he's going to have me do a Facebook page for him soon as well. Keeps me from having to make payments though!

Re: Friedman BE-OD pedal inbound...

I will say, though, that the Shirley is an amazing sounding amp.
