FullShred’s younger cousins ??

The original question was for a derivative of the FS. I think the Evolution qualifies.
Yeah it’s for my bustard V build - I want it to have a bit of that classic v vibe so PAFesqueness has to be there. I have an overwound S-Deco there and it’s gorgeous harmonics but I am missing FullShred’s kick.

You could try a Jason Becker Perpetual Burn. I don't know anything about the pickup, but the description might be what you are looking for.

It sounds like you need something medium-hot with a clear tone and nice harmonics.

Custom is still a solid first choice in my book. It was literally designed to be a "P.A.F. on steroids" (Duncan's own words).

I do think you might dig the Thrash Factor, as well. It's sort of a less compressed "JB" with a tighter response.

And, as Top-L said, the Perpetual Burn might be worth a look...the Pegasus is in that ballpark, too.

So, a short list from the SD camp would be...

Custom <-- start here!
Thrash Factor
Perpetual Burn
Pegasus

Or, just stick a ceramic mag in your S-Deco! ;)

Every once in a while, I do a very silly thing and swap the Custom out for something else, but I eventually realize that the Custom is probably the closest to a perfect-for-me pickup as exists and correct my mistake.

I think the Custom gets overlooked for the newer, fancier, more modern boutique/specialized pickups, but the Custom wind is so good at many things.

I tried the thrash factor and I'll agree with you on tighter but to my ears it sounded more compressed than the JB. That's really what made me change it was too compressed to my taste. I'm not claiming to have perfect hearing by any means. Just wondering what amp you were using with it? Any pedals?

I'm not arguing about what was said, but I dont hear anything PAF-like in the Custom. I mean, its not a single coil, and its not a Super Distortion. It uses a hot ceramic magnet. Maybe its closer to the Distortion?

Same thing with the PAF Pro. Its trebly and sharp. PAF is fat and open. At least it is Alnico5 magnet so the argument could be made.

Then my 57/66 EMG set was advertized as PAF inspired. That is complete BS. I mean, maybe a PAF with triple the output.

I don't know where they come up with this stuff.

It’s between Custom and Perpetual Burn for sure …. With Custom I hear that PAFy openness but as crazy as it sounds with Perpetual I hear Schenker brothers play …. Ceramic into S-Deco? A6 or A8 ? Will it be closer to custom or perpetual ?

If you want more punch and attitude, go with the Custom

If you want a smoother tone and don't mind something with a little less output than your Full Shred, go with the Perpetual Burn

If you mag-swap the S-deco, start with a simple Ceramic and then see if there's still something you want to change about it.

I think it's been two weeks now since I swapped from the 59 bridge back to the Custom in my Les Paul, and the Custom sounds very much like the 59, just bigger and more powerful. I think the PAF-on-steroids description after hearing them literally one after the other in the same guitar is right on target.

Ordered Custom. Not sure whether to put A6/A8 in S-Deco and see if it will be a hotter S-Deco or just trade it away here .....

An S-Deco?
Have you tried it in another guitar?
A8 would definitely make it hotter. But maybe too much bass.
I'd go with single thick ceramic first.
