Fusion-esq descending pentatonics

All,

Some jazz and/or fusion that I've heard sometimes has these fast runs of descending notes, around a pentatonic theme. I was wondering: are they doing these using pull-offs? Or are they running enough compressor that you can't hear the pick attack? I'll try to post an audio clip of what I'm talking about.

Are pull-offs just very hard? Or is it me? I want to make the sequence very fluid, but I'm not sure how else to do it.

Most jazz players pick just about every single note. They also don't generally use a compressor, simply guitar-amp with the tone knob turned down quite a bit.
