G12H30 type of speaker for my Peavey C30?

Guys,

I am finding myself more and more hating the V30 that I have in my Peavey C30. I have changed the power transformer (which was tiny by the way) and some important caps to open up its tone. I also swapped its stock speaker, which I think is not good at all for a clean tone, with a Celestion V30.

It helped. I am almost there.

In the near future I will either be selling this amp (and get myself a Blackface Deluxe type of thing), or change its speaker.

Currently, I kinda dig its tone with strats in every position but the bridge. And with HBs I do not like its uppermid heavy scream at all. That uppermid thing is also the problem with the bridge on my strat (which actually is a tele lead pickup, Duncan JD) .

I sure helps to cut through the mix, but the sound overall is sort of too nasal, too much of that uppermid heavy scream especially under drive.

I love G12H30's both the MIE and China versions. However, they are 30W, and I need something at least 60W no?

So what do I do?

G12-65?

Or Scumback H75 65W version?

Any other suggestions?

What I want is clear tone. In fact, I also could go for Jensens, I think...

By the way, I also love the stock speaker in my Marshall JTM30. As far as I know it's called a "Celestion Marshall G12 Heritage T4612", and I do not know exactly what speaker this is. But I suspect that it is a G12-65. Any info on that?

Thanks in advance,

Best,

B

I had and sold a C30. I hada used a G12H and also a WGS Greenback clone.

The WGS is a 25W IIRC and I had no wattage matching issues, in fact the breakup was pretty sweet

The G12H is tighter and the Greenie well, looser.

I have a Celestion G12H30 ready actually, 16 Ohms... But I was kinda afraid to get the speaker torn.

So you say, its ok?

C30 is pretty loud no?

BTW I have a 12AT7 in V3, sort of cools it down (and also a 5751 in V1). So it is a bit less loud.

I think the Vintage 30 sounds better in closed back cabs than it does open back cabs. In an open back cab the upper mids are a little to edgey. Maybe this is because I hear more bass from the V30 in a large closed back cab and that bass balances the mids better so they don't seem to jump out in your face so much. In an open back combo amp, like a Deluxe Reverb, the V30 sounds really good but doesn't have as much bass and so the pronounced midrange seems even more pronounced.

The Vintage 30 reminds me of the JB pickup in a way.

Any ways Doc, I doubt I'd blow a G12H30 with a 30 watt amp. I'd go ahead and try the G12H30.

I really like the G12-65 as well. But it doesn't sound as much like Jimi Hendrix as the G12H30. To my ears the G12H30 has a little more crunch to the mids and the G12-65 has a little less crunch and a little more growl.

In terms of ceramic magnet Celestions those two are my two favorites. I use the G12H30's in my Deluxe Reverb and the g12-65 in my Princeton Reverb.

Na, good match

Loud? Too loud for my basement playing. I really had to crank it to get into it's sweet spot

Thanks guys.

Lew, "The Vintage 30 reminds me of the JB pickup in a way." this observation, I'd say, is spot on! At least in my case anyway.

I think, I also might try to convert the c30 to a closed back, no? All it takes is some piece of wood, and a bit patience. What would you say?

This is a Classic 30, Doc? Mostly tubes? Sealing up the back might cause overheating.

The "problem" is the Vintage 30, IMO. I'd try a G12-65 or G12H30.

Re: G12H30 type of speaker for my Peavey C30?

Yes, it has 4 EL84s and 3 preamp tubes. You are right, I did not think of the overheating issue.

Thanks...

As I have said, have a G12H30 16Ohm in its box... Will be trying it our.

Let us know...

FYI, if you do not know already, on t he C30 you need to drop out the chassis to do a speaker swap. Not a big deal, but better to know before you get started

Re: G12H30 type of speaker for my Peavey C30?

whats up doc! dont close the back youll cook those el84's.

i think youll love the g12h, its one of my favorites. i really like the g12m too but its not as full sounding or as loud. the g12-65 sounds like a greenback but a little less woody and a little fuller on the bottom end. great speaker too.

ive never loved the v30 by itself, i really like the jb analogy though. mixed with something else the v30 can sound great.

if you dont run your c30 full up then i dont think you should have a problem with the speaker only being 30w.

Re: G12H30 type of speaker for my Peavey C30?

I've got a pair of old G12-65s in my 2x12 cab and they are quite nice. A good alternative if you want to get away from the stiffness and bark of a V30. I recommend!

Thanks for the heads up. Quite important.

I kinda remember, have swapped the stock blue marvel with a v30 myself.

Hi Jeremy,

I don't push it all the way. Just to the point where it starts to break (in the "normal" channel, I don't use its crunch channel at all). For the solos, I hit it with a TS type of OD.

So I think I should be ok.

No?

Re: G12H30 type of speaker for my Peavey C30?

As for other suggestions, over at the Peavey Amps forum, the most commonly suggested swap for the C30's Blue Marvel is a Weber Ceramic Blue Dog... just an option you may want to consider.

I followed this speaker suggestion but put the Weber in the Peavey 112e ext cab instead, sice I didn't want the hassle of removing the amp chassis to install. So now I have to run the stock Blue Marvel in the combo together with the Weber in the ext cab, when I want to hear the latter. Sounds great to me, but at this honeymoon stage, I really can't tell you much more.

I have the Mojotone BV-30H. It's a G12H30 clone. I think it sounds fantastic myself and the price is right.
