Re: Gary moore loner poll

Voted single bucker. I liked the live one better. Besides, in the "official video" version it looks like they switch guitars some where in the middle to get some green-screen effect...kinda negates the idea of assuming that any of the guitars seen in the video are the ones we're hearing.

Ya I think they mounted the headstock cam on a dif guitar..... those dang producers never think we notice!

Re: Gary moore loner poll

I thought the San Dimas older ones were Poplar but I am not a guru... someone will chime in.

Re: Gary moore loner poll

Single bucker.. looks amazing too.

I will say that Gary Moore is a seriously nasty human being.
he was my hero when i was young and learning to play and 15 yrs ago i was picking up my new PRS from Chandler guitars in London and gary was downstairs trying amps.
I recognised his playing and asked Charlie if he'd ask Gary if i could say hello and get him to sign my guitar.
Charlie went down and i heard Gary say " F***ing fans get on my F***ing nerves, tell him to F*** off "
I wasn't rude or bullish, so he could have politely refused and i'd have been cool.

I've never bought or played one of his songs since.

This month's Classic Rock has a story with Ginger baker and he doesn't say anything nice about him either! :thumbsdow

Re: Gary moore loner poll

FYI- the original was recorded with a Paul Reed Smith "standard" (i.e. not a custom). It was the entire reason I ever bought my first PRS back in 1987. Loved that tone (at the time).

That said the Live version from Stockholm is the best version by far.

Re: Gary moore loner poll

The two 1986 Charvel Custom Shop guitars built for Gary, apparently during the Mike Eldred era, :re his recent Q&A here.
These two are for me the finest of the Strat head Charvels from that era.
Gary Moore, I have been a fan for many years too, since the early eighties in fact.
Gary is a real person and always speaks his mind. What he does not deserve is what has happened to him through the Greeny sale and the ridiculous #9-2227 Stripe 'controversy' over it being Ronnie Montrose's stolen guitar in 1972, which Gary bought from a legitimate English guitar dealer in 1988.
Back to these Charvels, the white one used on "The Loner" live has an EMG 81 fitted and an OFR top mount.
The pickguards cover a double humbucker route and have an unusually large amount of screws!
The white one has chrome hardware and a black FR nut.
The red rosewood board version has a single EMG 85 fitted.
I wanted to buy these guitars so badly for many years, but would have had to pay unsavory individuals large amounts of money and one went in a charity auction I believe.
I have heard literally tons of Gary Moore, F$#% Off to fans stories and they are true.
I am currently trying to contact Gary on behalf of a major guitar manufacturer and his guitar tech, will not answer any emails.
The concert Live at Stockholm has some off the best most melodic Celtic influenced rock you will ever hear.
The awesome control Gary has over the tremolo, is some of the best playing you will ever hear.
A Japanese luthier company recreated the white guitar.
The white Charvel was re-necked with a Jackson branded rosewood boarded
neck, after the original maple one being too worn out, for the After The War Tour, the last time they were played by Gary in 1989.

Any questions on these guitars, PM me, I have lots to say.
Gary briefly used the PRS guitars, but not for very long and he was one of the first UK artists to play one..
There are very few who can equal Gary's raw emotion and beauty of melodic, thematic solos, this one being one of my favorites:

The song the Loner was first featured on a Cozy Powell album, either 'Over The Top' or 'Octopus". I'm not sure, but Clem Clempson plays on that version..

Oh a Gary Moore opinionated hater, you have to do better than that, there are real experts at slagging off Moore with the 'truth', such as LPF, ect, let's hear some new criticism, or 'opinions'??:banghead::scratchch

Dude don't be a ******bag, K? I'm a HUGE gary moore fan- just not his "back to the blues" diatribe he spouts off. Gary can say what he wants and can certainly can play whatever style of music he wants. I just found the quote from DRG absolutely true- The thing is, he's an amazing player with BOATLOADS of chops witin a huge range of styles-not just "blues". His fusion work with Colliseum II, The Grinding Stone era, and much of his early solo work showcase the guy HAD a total command of the instrument.

But somewhere along the line (most likely due to his lack of commercial succcess and inability to work with anyone for more than a tour or two) Gary lost his marbles, dissed all the "Rock" fans and decided to pigeonhole himself as a "blues player". Ironic thing is, he's a HORRIBLE blues player, because he totally blows his load within the the first 10 seconds of a solo- which is totally NOT "bluesy". Yes, he's got the pentatonic chops, and he's still as powerful as ever but he had far more restraint, taste, and melodic sensibility -characteristics ESSENTIAL to a truly great blues player-when he was playing rock, metal & fusion. That version of The Loner is a perfect example.

Re: Gary moore loner poll

Whenever I listen to that song all I hear is a guy wishing he was Jeff Beck...

IMO he is a much, much better blues player than anything else

Jeff don't call me a d&*((bag OK, I have had just pure haters who lurk and say the same thing over and over, I didn't start the thread, I am relating my own experience, everyone who doesn't care for Gary's blues switch, says they are huge fans otherwise, on other forums this got so bad people were banned for example...JeffB Gary is smarter than people give him credit for and he can play blues simply and with great feeling..imo.
I don't know any of you guys over here much

Re: Gary moore loner poll

Jeff don't call me a d&*((bag OK,

You are correct- that was a bit strong, I apologize.

And yes I'm opinionated, but def NOT a hater. I have my issues with Gary because he's always passing the buck on his commercial failures and troubles- he needs to take a good look in the mirror. I have little repsect for Gary Moore the person in recent years, But Gary the guitar player- the person he used to be- is an absolute monster on the fretboard and certainly one of my top 3 guitar playing influences.

Re: Gary moore loner poll

Personally I don't like anything about him. His 'metal' era consisted of songs that sounded like they'd been written by a 12 year old and his 'blues' playing stinks. I remember hearing 'Still got the Blues' for the first time and laughing my head off. Should have been called 'Never had the Blues and never Will'.

Re: Gary moore loner poll

wow this turned into a flame-on thread eh?

I just wanted to know what guitar you guys liked better ha ha ha.

That being said, I was once in a record store... yeah records and tapes.
I heard "Still got the blues" come on and immediately walked over asked who it was and bought the album. Perhaps my only blues albums are GM . . except for zztop I spose. I think he's got 100x more blues chops than this metalbanger over here.....

And BTW I picked the jackson guitar... I'm the only one too!

Fun times.....

Re: Gary moore loner poll

I like both tones, but the single coil tone fits that particular solo better!

I prefer Gary in his Colliseum II days. I know it's not very popular, but his tone, his attitude, his emotion was Huge! I still think, the solo on War Dance has the best GM tone ever!
