Gary Moore strat question

i was sad to hear Gary had passed away... since his name has been all over the net it has of course re-egnited my interest in his albums... i was a huge fan of his Victims Of The Future period....

but i have just found his Red House Cover from the 50th Aniversary Concert dvd from Wembley 2004... freaking killer playing... he was using his famous old Red strat from the looks of things... i'll post a link

around the early-mid 2000's Gary was using Marshall DSL's... i've never been able to get my stock 66 Custom Shop to sound good thru my TSL or any DSL's that i've tried... i must be doing something wrong... LOL

was his strat modded with beefier PU's... was he using any pedals with his strat into a DSL...?

love that sound!!!

I don't know if he was using it for the Strat gig you mentioned. It does sound like a different tone to me but from the looks of things there were major differences in how the different clips were recorded so I dunno. DS-1s are cheap as ****. Have you tried one?

Re: Gary Moore strat question

Withe the DSL100, he liked to use a Boss DS-1, on the clean channel. The dirty channel had plenty of gain, on it's own.

The Strat was stock. Some of that beefiness also came from the 10-52 strings.

This is really ****ing hard, talking about Gary in the past tense...

Re: Gary Moore strat question

Of the two Strats Gary played back then (COP/VOTF era) one was a early 80s 62 MIJ reissue (the cream one) and the Red real dealwhich was either a 61 or 62-I cannot recall which. Both were stock. Gary nearly always played stock instruments. He was the kind of guy who would find a guitar that just sounded fantastic all by its lonesome, and that was that. He did fiddle alot with marshalls and pedals though.

IDK what Gary was using for that red House clip other than the vintage Strat and DSL. I'm just glad he wasn't using the old Distortion pedal straight into the board "G-Force" tone

Re: Gary Moore strat question

I was just watching the Vid, there is def a DS1 near him on the stage but not where his wah pedal is- you can see ti around 7:20 in an overhead shot right up against a stage monitor. Maybe someone who has the DVD can get some better idea of what his pedalboard looks like?

Re: Gary Moore strat question

I like his sound on Still got the blues for you. That whole album has some killer playing, Gary had a tendency to overplay but on that recod his playing was right where it should have been. I don't recall exactly what amps he was using but I thought they were 900's?? At least the time line would have been right for them.

For that album, it was a '59 Les Paul, Marshall Guv'nor, and a JTM 45 through a 4x12 loaded with EV speakers.

Re: Gary Moore strat question

I like this

Gary: "One of the guys from Metallica goes up to [producer] Bob Rock and says, 'This is the sound I want,' and plays him 'Oh Pretty Woman' from "Still Got The Blues". Then they proceed to go through all these pre-amps and processors to achieve it.

I felt I should write and say, 'That's not how to do it. You've got the money now guys, go out and buy a '59 Les Paul, a Guv'nor pedal and a JTM45!"

if i am not mistaken the 80's MIJ ( having serial numbers JV which stands for Japanese Vintage) are made of Basswood. I had one. real good sounding.

His may have been American, as they were first produced in '82. These ones were Alder.

But you're right. Those JV's are awesome!

Re: Gary Moore strat question

Yep - Absolutely my favorite strat sound ever. I like blues that's played by a rippin rocker.....its right up my alley.

Absolutely! Good stuff. I remember buying the Corridors of Power tape cassette when it first came out in the early 80s. Some great stuff there too. That intro to "End of the World" is just amazing. And Gary's version of "Shapes of Things" on VOTF just ripped.

BTW... I'm trying to find a sliver lining here. And I'm thinking that maybe I'll be able to find some of Gary's early work soon as a result of his passing and someone re-issueing those albums on CD to make some more money.

Many years ago Gary was at the London Guitarist Show. He walked into the Marshall stall to say hello to Jim who was signing stuff. He was asked to play something. So he picked up a Tokai Love Rock which was plugged into a combo and played 'So What'. He sounded great. 90% of Gary's tone was in Gary's Hands. I was in the queue and audience to this and he came across as being a nice enthusiastic guy who was happy to chat to people. I think the grumpiness he was accused of was saved for Journalists.

Re: Gary Moore strat question

watched a youtube clip the other day... it was Gary being interviewed by Marshall... he says he owns about 100 amps.... and adds if you can't get a good sound thru a Marshall you are a crap player... LOL... guess i'm crap... but i knew that!!! LOL

in this 2009 interview he says he was going back to using plexi reissues on stage and had been using the normal reissues of the 1959, but had just recieved 3 new Hand Wired Plexi Reissues!

a Plexi sure is a completely different sounding amp then the DSL 100's...
