Gear Ripped Off - Need To Replace Delay Pedal - Suggestions For Tape Echo vs Delay?

Someone ripped me off... long story, don't want to get into it, but I need to get another delay pedal. I'll probably go back to my AD999 because I was happy with it, but I have seen a huge variety of tape echo and delay pedals out there. Strymon, Wampler, etc... I'm not into heavy effects, so I use them lightly. I also use them mostly on overdriven/distorted sounds because I don't play clean very often. My main effects are only delay, chorus and flanger. Anyway, first explain the pros/cons of these tape echo vs delay pedals, and then provide some suggestions you might have. Thanks.

Check out the mxr carbon copy analog delay. I play OD music, too and this pedal gain give depth or a nice doubling like effect. It also sounds like classic delay a la David Gilmour. It has a modulation switch that makes it sound like a warm chorus. Since it is analog the delay only extends to 700ms. You will need digital if you want longer or a looping function. It costs about $120.

The one I'm liking these days is a lowly Boss DD-20. I've got a few others including a Strymon, Fulltone TTE and H&K Replex. The Fulltone TTE sounds better IMO, but the DD20 is a little more flexible and convenient.

I think you'd really like the Diamond Memory Lane Jr. It's really an incredible delay with a great featureset, intuitive interface, and incredible tone. It sounds great clean or distorted. Check it out.

That sucks...

Might also want to check out DIY builds popular on the web (supposedly can build em yourself for ~$70, or pay someone to do it/buy one used): Echo Base, Modulus Maximus

These things have ridiculous amounts of options/versatility and get the functionality of the $300+ category of monster pedals

Malekko Ekko and TC Flashback are in the same price range. Analog vs digital. I wouldn't go Wampler or Strymon if you're a light delay user. You'd pay more than it's worth to you.

i fancy the X4, sounds nice.

I've got an X4 on my board, it's great! A little bit large though, so if you don't need presets maybe just go for the normal Flashback.

The ProGuitarShop EP-3 toneprint sounds really good.

How about that Alien Echo pedal, anyone own one? The Wampler is up at the top of my list as well as the Strymon.

You might want to check out the new Minifooger MOOG Delay. The pedals are smaller and less expensive and from what I have heard they are mind blowing. My Moogerfooger Flange is a showstopper, I cant wait to check out the delay.

The MF Delay is a 100% analog delay providing 35mS-700mS of rich, blooming analog repeats. At shorter settings, the MF Delay is fast and articulate. This is perfect for creating classic slap-back sounds with expressive swells, and even plate-verbs. At medium and long settings, the repeats become darker, naturally trailing into a beautiful warmth and character not found in any other delay pedal. Connect an expression pedal and dynamically control feedback swells, or switch to delay time to create chorus/flange and tape delay effects. The MF Delay was designed with over 300 carefully selected components including 4 Bucket Brigade Delay chips, a discrete JFET input stage, and a vintage compander circuit for superior tone and feel.

CONTROLS

TIME- Adjustable from 35mS - 700mS. At shorter settings, delay repeats are brighter and more articulate - perfect for slap-back and plate-style reverb/delay. As you increase the Time, the delay trails become warmer causing sounds to move and decay naturally under each new note or chord.

FEEDBACK- Adjustable from a single repeat with no decay, to extended trails that dissipate into a reverb-like state. When pushed past 2 o’clock feedback trails swell into infinity. This is an excellent creative tool for making sonic beds and trails where notes decay into a wash of musical noise. Pushed to maximum, the MF Delay will self oscillate.

MIX-Allows you to determine the blend between dry and effected signals. At minimum, delay trails are nearly inaudible. This is useful for ghost delays and creating natural room-verb sounds. At maximum, your dry signal is removed completely, which allows the MF Delay to work perfectly in an amplifier effects loop.

DRIVE- A pre-delay circuit that provides greater than 22dB of gain to both input and delayed signal. At low ranges it is excellent for creating subtle boost and mild tonal coloration. At middle position the sound becomes more mid-forward and punchy. At itsmaximum position, you have an incredibly natural boost/overdrive in your delay pedal that is great by itself or paired with an MF Drive.

EXPRESSION PEDAL INPUT: When assigned to Time, this input allows you to create everything from chorus/flange effects and tape delay to monstrous pitch shifting. When assigned to Feedback, this input allows you to swell in and out of infinite feedback loops and subtle delay trails.

Vox Time Machine...does modern and vintage echoplex sounds, tap tempo, huge range, very simple to use and sounds gorgeous.

I've definitely checked that one out. The boost function is cool but not something I'd ever use. I suppose I could just leave it at zero. The delay itself is a little dark but natural sounding from what I can hear.

I like my flashback x4 and I had the smaller version too. Pretty versatile, has a tape echo emulation, a reverse delay that works really well and a good looper. Programmable too, has a USB port and does stereo. The small one is the size of an MXR box. Dipswitch to set buffered or true bypass. And it's affordable. Their tech support is decent too. I'm a big fan.

Sorry to hear this.

If you're a light user, I'm not sure an authentic tape echo makes sense. That said, it you just want the vibeiness and the spookiness of the tape sound, you have a lot of options.

Strymon El Capistan at the moment is my favorite echo when I'm in an ambient and/or Eric Johnson kind of mood. It really captures the beauty and loneliness of tape, but without the hassles. It's something of a double-edged sword, though; it also nails some of tape's imperfections (the mild detuning effect, etc. You won't have to buy tape or clean heads, though. :bandit:)

I've been having a blast with mine. You can go pretty deep with it. I don't know that it would make sense for a light user or a slapback user, though. But it's less than a third the price of a real-deal tape machine that still works.
