Genuine Gibson parts don't match!

I've just bought genuine creme Gibson pickup rings, switch tip and selector ring and none of them are the same shade of creme! So annoying

True. They're all different. Unfortunately it's sometimes different materials so "give it time" makes it even worse! Some of the colors zig, some of the colors zag.

That sounds like genuine Gibson. Lack of consistency and all just like the old days. (and current day some say)

FWIW - when I bought my Gibson Les Paul new in 1994, the binding was tan, the pickguard was yellow beige, the switch plate was reddish tan, the tuners were green, the inlays were blue. Now, 20 years later, they all match.

I kinda had to laugh when I tried to put one of my '74 SGs in a modern SG case. Doesn't fit at all.

Things get a bit better when you order the historic line labeled parts. Sweetwater has them with free shipping.

Re: Genuine Gibson parts don't match!

Yep, historic is much more consistent. They also manage to avoid the flesh pink tinge that happens so much on more recent gibsons.

Re: Genuine Gibson parts don't match!

Fortunately the bits from WD I have received match up with some of the Gibson parts without any lack of quality

Re: Genuine Gibson parts don't match!

Yep. It's ridiculous. I have a 2004 Les Paul, and it drives me nuts. The binding is one color (dark pinkish cream). The rings, switch tip and guard are another (lighter cream). The switch ring is yet another (closer to the binding, but not quite as dark). And they are ALL too yellow/creamy for my taste. I think that stuff should start out as a very mild parchment color, and yellow differently as time goes on. But if they are gonna use a heavy cream color instead, they could at least make the parts match. At the very least, they need to lighten the binding so it matches the guards and rings.

I'm pretty sure that Gibson could change the colour just like that. I worked in a plastics factory in my early 20's, and the colour was in the material you bought.....one shade of cream is the same price as another.

It becomes an upselling tool for Historics and the historic plastics line. The price of moulds too is swallowed by the quantities of production. The price of some of the exotic pickup rings for example is extraordinary.

Yeah, this happened to me as well, I tried to put my '84 LP Custom into my 2007 LP case.. and it didn't fit!

There is no chance that Gibson has a plastic molding factory of their own. God knows where in the world they contract to. The more you get toward Asia the more you see the products coming back being substantially different from the prototypes they sent you first, or from the last batch. Color control will be difficult.

At least the regular historic plastic parts are cheap, sweetwater has them with free shipping.

The worst plastic I got is the Dimarzio branded rings. Didn't even have screws.
