George L cables

I was thinking about using monster cables for all my stuff. But then i heard that George Ls are very nice and cost less. I checked into them and I like the idea of there solderless cable stuff. Can anyone tell me more about it?

Re: George L cables

They're great for pedalboard use but I wouldn't trust the screw-in construction from guitar to pedalboard (though I know folks who use 'em in that application). That said, I'm not too fond of Monster Cables, either because I think their connectors have lousy strain relief.

Personally, I use ProCo cables but if I were in the market for top shelf stuff, I'd get mine from Bayou Cables. They're made from premium components at a price that's comparable if not cheaper than the Monster stuff.

I prefer Planet Waves to anything, but I plug straight in, all my FX are in the loop.

Re: George L cables

I have em to link all my pedals together, they sound great, and you cut them to size so it look neat too.

Re: George L cables

i use gerogeLs for most of my studio- they sound great, and when connected right, they are perfect for guitar to pedals, and pedals to amp.

Re: George L cables

www.voodooamps.com I use George L cables for the very short connections in my rack/ mostly for a GCX audio switcher but The Voodoo cables with give you the body and gain more acurately and cost almost the same. I have over $280 worth of Voodoo cables and feel they are worth every penny.

Re: George L cables

i have several cables by several different companies and i honestly can only tell a tiny tiny difference

so my theory is you make yourself think theres a big difference to justify all the money spent

Re: George L cables

Something tells me you have never used a Voodoo cord. I only bought 1 cord 6 months ago then a speaker cord 3 months ago. They sounded so good that my friends bought a bunch of cords and we all hear a substantial difference. Now all my buds are or already do have Voodoo cords. They have beat every cable we compared it to. I figure it only makes about a 15-25% improvement but when you add that with the other improvements like pickup replacement etc. then you get a better chance of getting all that you can from tone degradation that occurs over bad cables etc. My fx loop used to sound like crap and very thin, not as much gain etc. With the Voodoo cables I can bareley hear the difference when the loop is on and when its off. I can now have the loop on and also retain the full, chunky, tone I like about my amp.

Re: George L cables

One thing quality cables give you is better shielding, so what you hear as being "better tone" is probably actually "less noise" from interference.

I use GeorgeL's cables in my pedalboard, and love them. They sound great, and since you build them yourself you can make them whatever length you want. I got the effects kit from MF, something like 10 feet of cable and 10 right-angle ends...

Re: George L cables

George's wife (I think that's what she said...) called the other day and I've been offered the George L line. It sounds like you guys feel they are worth carrying. I know Eric Johnson uses George L. Cables so I think I'm going to call them back today and go ahead and place an opening order. Just thought I'd let'cha all know because it'll be a couple of weeks before I can put the George L. cables on my website. Thanks, Lew

Very cool Lew! Thanks for the heads up.

Re: George L cables

George L's!!! Much neater appearance, and less noise-interference!!! I use the planet waves cables with compression springs for better contact from guitar to board, and board to amp, though. With a lifetime warranty, I will just return it should the need arise. I have had the same one for over a year now, and have had NO problems.

Re: George L cables

I use Monster cable for standard cables, although ANY highend brand is just fine IMO.

As for pedalboards, George L's are a MUST. You simply buy the proper number of angled 'do it yourself' solderless plugs and about 6 feet of cable. One thing you've got to remember is to cut them to size using a carpet knife and cutting board, not wirecutters! They need to have a nice even cut, then you just feed the end into the plug, tighten the bolt, test them for continuity with a ohm meter, and voila!!

In addition to wiring the pedalboard neatly with those, I also use colored zipties to route everything so it looks like a pro job. Then brace the pedals with industrial 3M velcro.

Re: George L cables

I have my whole rack wired with the vintage Red cable. I do'nt know if it sounds any different than the black, but looks cool. I also like the Gold connectors, you can get straight or Right angled ones.

Sometimes they can be a little tricky to assemble, but I have never had one come loose in 2 years. I also like the fact that you can get the little jackets tht go over the ends in different colors, so now looking at my GCx from the back it's easy to see what goes where.

Re: George L cables

I agree. I use George L's for the pedalboard and wherever there will be little movement or stress. Monster Jazz for guitar to FX board and FX board to amp.

I totally disagree. When you play 200 shows per year and go through cables almost as much as strings you'll notice a BIG difference. I use Monster cables and go through alot less. Worth the money. I will try the George L's though as I hear lots of good things from pros.

When I was 17 I bought the cheapest cables too ya know,,, :)

Re: George L cables

Other than the fear of the connector separating from the cable... why do some of you consider it a bad idea to use George Ls for anything other than pedalboard use???

I'm about to place an order for some. I use a monster from my guitar to the board, but I was planning on using George Ls for everything else:

pedal to pedal
FX loop send & return (8' to 10' each)
pedalboard to amp (8' to 10')

For the above applications there will be little if any "movement" of those cables, so again other than the possibile loss of connection is there any other reason not to use George Ls? Also red or black... what's the difference other than gauge?

They're stiff, particularly for the thickness of the cable, and probably prone to kinking.

If you are set on George L cables they make a version already made with ends on it that have stress free jackets around it. Get the thicker of the 2. I tried both types at 20 ft and the thicker one has more girth but less gain than the thinner one. You can always turn your gain up. I stook both of my George L instrument cables at 20 ft back to the store as quick as I could after trying the Voodooamps cable. It smokes George L and is less than $10 more.
