"GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

Fat PAF's (now "Fat PATS") sounded pretty good to me but, like others have mentioned - the Mean 90 is where it's at! It's not just "good for the money", just a damn good pickup.

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

Hi, I plan to have one Brighton Rock to pair with a Dimarzio Red Velvet, neck and middle.
I'd like to have the GFS RWRP with the Dimarzio for quiet, so I need to know if GFS standard magnetic pole is South like the Dimarzio
Basically I would take the RWRP, just want to be sure

Can someone tell which is the magnetic pole of those pups ?

Well for $40ish pickups, I'm going with Dragonfire. They don't have a JB as far as I know, but they do make some great pickups, and for the money, you can't go wrong.
they have the screamer set which i owned briefly and if you take out the stock ceramics and put in a A5 the bridge and neck sound very similar to the JB/59 set.

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

Ive installed: premium alnico strat set, alnico 2 strat set, overwound greybottom strat set, 58 humbuckers in 3 guitars (a joe pass, a gild s100 and a US strat), lil killers in a tele and dogear p90s in a 1966 epiphone Al Caiola.
Out of the strat sets, the a2 set was nice and warm. overwounds were really nice - nicer than texas specials. The premiums is did not dig, lots of bottom and top but sounded cold and uninspiring.
I prefer ssl-1s to all of em tho.
The 58s are an improvement over epiphone pickups but have that same kind of nasal honk of the gibson 57's - which is weird cos they are a different magnet. All upper mids, not much else.
Lil killers sounded really great in my tele even tho the neck pickup rail barely reaches the top and bottom strings.
Dogear P90s - really fine pickups. Articuate but warm - and they came in a calibrated set (unlike gibsons) and have the string spacings also correct for vintage instruments.
Yeh i like gfs for sure and had good success with them, but having said that - none of my current axes have gfs pickups in there, but my main working axes all have SD's

I have a guitar with a set of Gibson '57 Classics. I have a guitar with a set of GFS Alnico II Classics. I literally CANNOT TELL THEM APART. Hell, yes, I would gig with the GFS Classics. My twist on "You get what you pay for" is "You get ripped off for what you pay too much for".

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

I have a couple of 6k Lil' Killers I got in a trade a few months ago. I plan to use one of them as a neck pickup in a medium-output strat with a Dimarzio FRED in the bridge. Should work out as a good combo!

GFS Mean 90...one of the best sounding P-90s made regardless of price (which just happens to be less than $35 and in a bucker sized case).

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

GFS Dream 90 is pretty great too... not quite as hot as it's "mean" brother, but still packs a good punch.

Also very impressed with the Dream 180 humbuckers and with the Gold Foil single coils.

Next project I'm thinking I'll try their ProTube lipstick humbuckers.

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

They have some pretty nice Gold Foils too. But then again, the best Gold Foils are the cheap ones.

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

I tried their Gold Foil humbuckers with alnico mag. I absolutely loved the chimey character of the highs, but the lows were REALLY muffled sounding. Could be the guitar I put them in so I'm going to reserve final judgement until I try them in a different guitar...probably something like a Tele. Man, if I could get that chimeyness throughout the tonal spectrum, I'd be in heaven.

And yes, the Dream 90 is also an excellent sounding pup. I've got it in one of my latest builds.

I put the Gold Foil single coils in the Strat build that I did last year (swamp ash body and maple neck with a rosewood board). Like you, I really dig the chimey quality of them, but I am not having any problem with the lows being muddy... in fact, I really like how they sound (of course, that could be the difference between singles and humbuckers). My only complaint would be that they are very quiet… Definitely the quietest of all my electric guitars. Not a huge deal though, I just use a setting on my programmable EQ at the beginning of my chain to boost the signal up to be in line with my other guitars.

I dig these 1959 Vintage Series ones. Comes off a little bright in the video but they are great

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

The newer pickups seem to get good reviews. I have a '63 tele bridge that I ordered based on some good comments but have yet to use it.

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

Jay has worked together with Artec for at least three years and had perfected the build quality without rising his costs too much. Kudos to him!

All the new p'ups from 2015 and on, have an outstanding quality build and in many cases, even the "right" materials and production processes used by several obiquitous "boutique" builders as well.

I've been getting his products for many years now, and I've never been let down.

I was interested in this thread because I just snagged a 2005 Epi SG Junior and the gfs sounds like the right kind of dirty for a hb90. Although I'm tempted by SD pups, I don't want something particularly clean for for a one-pup guitar anyway. The only question I'd have is, do you put a neck mean 90 in there or the bridge mean 90?

Re: "GFS" Guitar Fetish P'ups?

I don't know if the GFS is a true P90 or not. Of course, this may not matter to you depending on what sound you want. Seymour really does not have a bad pickup, so I am sure there is something you will like.
