Gibson 57 Classic pickup

Re: Gibson 57 Classic pickup

I"m not sure I'd give it "great" status, but I do like them better than the Burstbuckers.

Re: Gibson 57 Classic pickup

They came stock in my '61 SG/LP reissue. I was unimpressed with the bridge pup and pulled it out. Maybe after they age a bit, they'll sound ok. Seth Lovers are much better.

Anybody heard this pickup ? I`m assuming it could do some early VH sound?

NO it does not! nor does the 57 classic or the BB's but i highly recomend either a custom wound PAF from
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/skgs/sk/Index.htm
for $65 or get a 61 HB($140) from http://www.peterflorance.com/humbuckers.html
eddie VH used a 1961 gibson P.A.F pulled from his '61 ES-335 for all the early stuff and the only mod done to it was the wax potting.

i think it has a very overpronounced upper mid/trebley tone. not creamy enough for older halen.
try a seth or anything but the classic 57 plus.

Again...read the reviews: http://www.legendarytones.com

IMO, the 57 Classic is a very good pickup but compared to Seths or Antiquitys it's a little bright, metallic and shrill. But only compared to something "better"! It's a very good pickup all in all...but you can do "better"! :smack:

Hold on here a minute? that review is for the classic 57 not the classic plus which is a overwound one(9.4K) and definitely different from the original 57 classic which is at 8.3K.
of the two the original is better for VH but 51501984 was asking bout the plus(9.K) not the original 57

Get a PAF thats what Eddie used!

Yeah i agree why go with a wannabe like a 57 classic or a 59b? just do like i did
and get a 1961 gibson P.A.F :headbang: they ONLY cost about $1500 each :eek2:
sorry i just had to! :laugh2: seriously Email this guy http://mywebpages.comcast.net/skgs/sk/Index.htm
tell him you want a exact copy of a 1961 GIBSON P.A.F and have him wax pot it
no fancy 4 conductor wire,no trem spacing but a EXACT dupe of a '61
it will cost about $65

This thread started out talking about the 57 classic...not the plus. Or did I misread the title of this thread? Nope...still looks like: "Gibson 57 Classic Pickup". Or did I miss something? :) Lew

my bad sorry, for whatever reason(TOO MUCH COMPUTOR,not enough SLEEP!) i thought he was speaking of the 9K which is the same resistance and magnet as the ducnan EVH.

First of all, my bad; I guess didn't realize that Seymour was a God. I had to know what year he started? Come on, who gives a ****? I defintely didn't. Lots of good pickups. Duncant makes a few . The 57's are fantastic, if that's what you want. The 57 Plus reissue 335 was incrtedible. The neck, which is usually my preferred of the 57's, was kind of muddy. i like Fralin's. I like some Suhrs. I've now forgotten my point after the incredible arrogance of the Duncan blog. They make some good pickups. They make some ****ty ones. Big deal I won't ever buy another of their stuff, even though I own a lot, because of this dumbassed arrogance. Hey Semour, you're OK. You're not a freaking genius. You soundclips totally suck. This was pathetic. Bye....

The duncan custom shop 78 (formerly known as EVH) will do early van halen very very well. I'm sure the 57 CAN do VH but the 78 would probably be better.

Re: Gibson 57 Classic pickup

i have 2 guitars with 57 classics....oh no wait...I took them out cos i thought they sucked.
i guess you can get an early VH sound with 57's, but you could get an early VH sound with a bunch of pickups. If you can get a set of 57s cheap then give them a go, otherwise there a lot much groovier and more fun to use pickups out there. Apart from his fingers and phrasing and the fact that he installed buckers in trem equipped strats (as well as the explorer and the weird "dragon" guitar) the hot rodded marshalls are really the key ingredient in his sound. fwiw i did stick a pair of 57's in my strat at one stage (i think i might have had alnico 5 magnets in there) and they sounded ok when running thru my mKIII marshall. Not amazing, but ok.
I reckon something wound a little hotter than a regular 57 would be better for the EVH job.
