Gibson Dealers

As I stated in a thread on the "Off Topic Forum", my wife and I were in NYC this weekend. We were within walking distance to Manny's music and Sam Ash, so, I HAD to make a stop. To my surprise, both are no longer Gibson dealers! Also, FWIW, I was NOT impressed at all with either store. The prices were crazy (of course it was NYC) and the selection wasn't what I expected. Nonetheless, its getting to the point where if the sign outside doesn't say Guitar Center, chances are there won't be any Lesters living inside :smack:

There's still Centre City Music, Wildwood, Dave's, Music Machine, etc... I think they are all still official Gibson dealers except for Dave.

that's why i one 8 fenders and only 2 gibsons lol...not b/c i don't want more gibsons or i don't like them but b/c a good les paul is a PITA to find.

LOL...I don't know why, but somehow I figured out what PITA stood for on the first try.

Like I said in another thread, I'm pretty luck in that I have a very reputable, knowledgeable Gibson dealer close to home. They can usually beat the online places and they do all setups for life, which is very cool. The downside is they are pretty small, so they don't have alot in stock....

thats how it is here, don't know if it's true or not, but i heard gc has bought over 50% of gibson stock and is putting all the little people out of bussiness.also heard that gibson retail prices are about to double.

I didn't think Gibson was a public company???? I hope that rumor is untrue! I'd hate to see a GC monopoly!

jsut what i heard, don't know if it's true or not. i was at the gibson factory in oct. not very impressed by thier current quality standards, seems they are making guitars more to look at than to actually play.

Unfortunatley this kind of thing is going on in a lot of manufacturing sectors these days. The bottom line is the almighty dollar and companies everywhere are finding everyway possible to speed up production to ridiculous levels in order to maximize profit. Good paying jobs are getting more scarce by the day in this country and a lot of employee's are really feeling the pressure from management to meet certain quota's, or else. Even if it means letting something go that was'nt quite up to standard, they are expected to get out as much as possible in as little time as possible. I've witnessed this first hand in the CNC shop that I work at. New management came in and the first thing they did was to speed every single job up and a lot of the guys are scared stiff by the thought of losing thier jobs if they don't get thier numbers out for the day. Tooling does'nt get changed as often as it should, certain inspections are no longer as meticulous as they once were and things are going out the door that are'nt up to par. I think the same thing is probably happening at Gibson.

I think your right, Mike, and its a real shame. I use to work in the Airline industry for 11 years and though obviously very different in nature to guitar building and manufacturing, I saw the exact same trends. I'm glad to be out of that rat race!

yeah i've heard gibson is making around 350 Les Pauls a day. In their hay day Gibson only made 5 or 6, I've heard. Seems ever since the origonal Gibson family sold it, the guy is more interested in making Epi's with the Gibson logo, putting better pickups in them...and charging too much :yell:
