Gibson ES-335 - Whole Lotta content

Re: Gibson ES-335 - Whole Lotta content

It's amazing how great a 335 can sound with the right pickups for you and your style.

And the 335 design really seems to produce some nice tones. I think that's why a surprising number of players have them, in spite of a body that they'd otherwise think was too conservative.

3x5s are by far my fave Gibson tone.

I just find them much less comfy than other guitars....I never can really get used to how they hang. I tried for over 2 years exclusively to get used to them.

Re: Gibson ES-335 - Whole Lotta content

I was looking at Epiphone 335s a while back because I wanted something with a Bigsby. I didn't find one I liked (ended up getting a Midtown w bigsby instead) but as I recall, it wasn't because of the neck. I remember them being more or less similar proportions. But I think Gibson makes a few different neck profiles for 335s. Mine seems to be a normal Gibson neck, maybe a bit on the slim side, which I like.

I really liked playing Jerry's Signature
and I really want to get something similar
what I liked most was the neck/frets/action

I begged Jerry to leave it to me in his will
but that may be a while
that guy is in amazing health

Always wanted to have a 335 with P-Rails in Triple shots (Hot Bridge) and have the tone knobs be push/pulls; one series/parallel when both pickups are in use, the other a phase switch between both pickups when both are in use. Maybe someday.

For me, 335's are a lot more comfortable than I expected them to be. I got my first 15 years ago, and wish I had done that a lot sooner. They don't have a deep, boxy body like most hollow bodies.

Re: Gibson ES-335 - Whole Lotta content

I never tried WLH in a 335. I am happy they work so well! Can we hear? I get asked all the time about pickups for 335s, and my standard answer is either Seths or Antiquities, but I'd love to recommend other sets too.

My favorite guitar besides fender strats :). Two of my favorite guitar players Eric Clapton, and Eric Johnson have em! Eric Johnson recorded "Cliffs of dover" on a Gibson 335 :).

And Ritchie Blackmore was playing a 335 during the Machine Head album. There's some great tones there.

Re: Gibson ES-335 - Whole Lotta content

I used one of my 335s (and a G&L Legacy) with my new Mesa Mark V:25 stack for an all ages Thanksgiving Day Community Feast benefit. Mine have the stock pickups, but I got a tip on adjusting them that worked much better than the way I had them set. These guitars just work so well for the stuff I do in my current band, and lately they are my 2HB guitar of choice. They can just be so sweet for blues and jazz, and they have big fat round lead tones that work for rock and country, too. I can see where the WLH could add just the right amount of muscle, without totally changing the character of the guitar.

Yesterday was a fun day...I was so inspired and we got a lot of nice compliments...which is REALLY nice when you're doing a benefit. The V:25 seems to be one of those amps that is going to sound good no matter what gets plugged into it. But the 335 was just so sweet..it's hard to beat!

Re: Gibson ES-335 - Whole Lotta content

Well I took the guitar back to the tech and he corrected the OOP wiring issue. It was a grounding problem that was easily fixed. For the record, when I emailed joneseyblues (who made the wiring harness) he replied the same day, which also happened to be Thanksgiving, with the correct troubleshooting advice.

That dude knows what he's doing. This guitar is gonna kick some a$$. If I get ambitious I might even try to post some clips.

Blackmore's 335 tone is my favorite of his, and I am a huge Blackmore fan.

I never paid much attention to the 335s. I always figured they were feedback machines due to the hollow bodies..

Solid block on the center, so it's not too bad

My friends epiphone swingster is the definition of a feedback machine even with potted pups. Then he wants to get a Seth Lovers set.

He already can't play the dirt channel of his amp at all without busting an eardrum from the feedback, imagine unpotted seths.

I had a Samick 335 I used back in the metal days for a power ballad and had no feedback issues even on the heavy part of the song. I should have never sold that guitar it was awesome.

Re: Gibson ES-335 - Whole Lotta content

Plenty of guitarists use 335s at crazy volumes with no feedback. I love 335s, but ergonomically, they are a little big for me- my right arm hurts after awhile.

Re: Gibson ES-335 - Whole Lotta content

The WLH set kicks ass. I was lucky enough to win a free set last year, and because I had nothing to put them in, I sold my Music Man Y2D and got a PRS McCarty that received the pickups. I think they sound killer, but judge for yourself:
