I'm afraid to get started with Explorers, because I know right away that I'd want at least three -- one with vintage-output PAF-type pickups, a second with hotter PAF or moderate pickups, and a third with something pretty wild like a Custom, Distortion, or EMGs.

Gibson Explorers Love or hate?
Metal dudes aside, I always associated Explorer more with The Edge. Whenever I've played one I just loved how the body felt against my right arm. I'd go for a Hamer Standard in a minute.

I've loved every explorer I've played. I own an FX-260, an explorer-type guitar. It's my favorite! The Gibson from the GC near me comes in at 2nd. If I owned it, I would probably like it more.
Anyway, Explorers are the best guitar for me.

Here's my 1982 Explorer E2, all original including the Dirty Fingers pickups both bridge and neck.
I bought this guitar new and I got it to be different from the Strat and LP guys but I could never get used to it. The guitar is bigger than I am !!!!
It sounds great and plays great but I'm just an LP kinda guy. Now it just sits in the case.

first nice electric I ever got was an explorer. it sounded good with my marshall silver jubilee half stack. and you can damn sure bet I played "the zoo" realy realy loud. and Black Out, and Rock You Like a Hurricane, and Breaking the Law, Liveing after midnight, Running with the Devil...........
I wouldn't judge any type of guitar by one I played at Guitar Center. I love my Explorer!! It sounds, plays, and looks great. I have a set of Phat Cats in it.

my disclaimer: I did not sport tight spandex nor "poisen look" hair LOL. I did play in garage bands and crazy old buildings where there was non glamouras clubs, and impromtu parties thrown. I even played this church party once, the kids went nuts, the head paster guy yelled at me to turn down, I fliped him off, they kicked us out, the kids began throwing stuff, and the parents blamed it all on us:headbang:
