Its not as good as an agile. Why anyone would spend more that 300 bucks on a guitar is beyond me. Its all just marketing.

Those Musicians Friend Deluxes from the early/mid Y2Ks rocked- I had an 04 or 05 in wine red, and I liked it a helluva lot better than any of the (production) standards I bought in the same time period (3 Standards, 1 standard Faded, a snot green inlay Classic, and I'm sure I'm missing one or two others). It had a nice chunky neck, and really sang, but I stupidly got rid of it because I just HAD to have full size buckers...and of course none of those really ever compared.

I could never understand the idealogy behind reissuing something and selling it for the same amount of money or more, that what you can buy an original for.

In all seriousness, I wouldnt pay that. The trad pros deliver the goods at a fair price. The color is odd too. Looks like they finally painted a guitar to match that pink cream plastic they use.. Id rather one of the older ones in wine red..

At an MSRP of 3300 street is gonna be around 2200 give or take so first I say point me to the 70's LP Deluxes for 2k and I'll buy a stack of 'em.
Second, deluxe LP's are not for everybody...mini buckers do not have the girth of full size buckers but FWIW, full size buckers do not have the stab and cut mini buckers have!

A quick local Craigslist scan showed three 70's Deluxes in the Bay Area - one for $2600, one for $2700, and a mint one for - get this - $3950.
So it could be a good option.

My first "Real" guitar was a Tobacco 76' Les Paul Deluxe I bought in mint condition in 1988 or so....for $425. I still have it. It's one of the best playing guitars I've ever layed my hands on. The mini humbuckers have the sweetest neck tones I've ever heard. Can't say the same for the bridge tho.....Tried a few swaps but never got it quite right so it stays closeted most of the time. Heavy as HELL too...pancake body!

Pete Townsend played them for a while, after the SGs and before the modded Kids Are Alright-era modded Deluxes with the Dimarzio Dual Sound in the middle. I have bootleg Who concert vid that WhoFan (I'm surprised he hasn't shown up in this thread yet) sent me from, what '74 or '75? Townsend's tone in that vid is the best I've every heard from him.
Check out Thin Lizzy's recent live CD, "Still Dangerous" (Recorded in Philly, yeah!) Scott Gorham's LP Deluxe slays. Whenever you have two guys playing LPs in the same band, make sure one of them is a Deluxe. It's a great way to separate the two LP tones.
I heard another great LP Deluxe tone just yesterday, listening to Mike Kenneally's "Guitar Theray Live" CD. His seconf guitarist on that disc, Rick Musallem, played an LP Deluxe (I believe with a full-size humbucker routed in at the bridge. His neck rhythm soiund is beautiful; funky but fat. Niel Young plays the Firebird Minis in his old black 50's Les Paul with the Bigsby..I know its not the same as the Deluxe Mini , but in the same ballpark. Of course, he cranks it through Tweeds, so.
As far as the bridge- just put a Hot Duncan Minibucker in it.

His "Old Black" is actually a '53 goldtop that someone (poorly) painted black, and replaced the bridge P90 with a Firebird mini. At some point that Firebird mini became microphonic, but Neil likes it that way and has learned to control it.
Anyway, I'm one of the few people who likes the tone of the LP Deluxe I guess.

New ones will be better guitars...better materals and better build quality not to mention to having to go through a dozen or more to find one good one...
