Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

Did Gibson drop it from the new line up? What jackasses if they did. They've added a few new models that don't look that exciting (IMO)

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

Whenever they ask Paul Reed Smith why he discontinues models- he says simply the public isn't buying enough for them to keep it in the lineup. So maybe that's the reason

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

Yeah they were $4000... And how would them dropping the custom make them jackasses? Were you planning to buy one?

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

If they can't make a $4000 guitar worth the price, may as well stop. Finally, something that resembles good business sense from Gibson.

I agree with you all. I was just pissed because I've always loved them (I've got the '61 LP/SG reissue). You guys are correct the prices are ridiculous.

That makes sense business-wise.

I'll look for a decent used one down the road

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

With this economy and people with less disposeable income, Both Gibson and PRS were forced to create model lines that were more affordable and accessible to the average musician- $4000 for something not absolutely stunning, when you can get a PRS flame maple 10 top or even Artist for the price seems a bit unreasonable

Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

Well they are still in stores locally so you could probably check around... They won't just get rid of them because they are not in production anymore...

There are 3 at my local store

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

Charging $4000 for a SG when also charging it for a Les Paul with binding and carved maple top just makes it too obvious that it is a ripoff.

It also eats into the validity of the Les Paul price via brand image as a result of that. It is a bad idea.

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

I love it when companies discontinue products, especially if I already own it. It just guarantees that it'll hold it's value.

The smart buyers today are scooping up 80's/90's/early 2000's classics. Everything got cheapened or moved to China after that. Now is the time to grab stuff that was quality made, just like everyone in the 70's who bought 50's/60's gear.

The irony is that if what you are saying there works out, it will be Chinese buyers driving that future market :)

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

Most people spending that much are buying the Historic Reissues, not customs. I see dozens, if not one hundred R8, R9, R0, etc... for every one custom I see for sale.

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

I like the Historic R8-R9-R0 models better than the Customs. That's why I don't have a Custom. :)

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

The Customs are all screwed up in one way or another. The history 57 custom has a mahogany top, which people who want a real les paul don't want. The 68 is chambered which is a joke since an actual vintage one was not. WTF. The non-historic LP Custom might be made in the custom shop but it is swiss-cheesed, has a nastyville bridge with posts in the deck and in recent times is victim to Gibson's almost-plywood fretboard design.

It's no surprise the LP standard derived historics sell better. They are all proper with the exception of some R8s which are documented to be chambered (as opposed to the non-historic custom where the swiss-cheesing is hidden from the customer).

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

My original point was that the original white, 3-pickup SG/LP Custom is such an iconic guitar. It's too bad they dropped it. I understand the $$ issue. That wasn't my point

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

This is one of the coolest SGs ever, but I could never justify the price.
